we have tent with sig, sig is waterproof, so if we pitchit on top of a wet groundshhet why is this a problem? pre buying a groundsheet we would pitchitonto wet ground?

recent posts about pitching in the rain seemed to suggest yo shold try to keep the groundshhet dry?

Your groundsheet/footprint should be smaller than your SIG, so if it rains the rain will not get between SIG and groundsheet.
Sometimes you cannot help but pitch on wet ground.

Yes the SIG is waterproof, so no, pitching directly onto wet grass is not a problem..... except..... In cooler climes, this wet would add cold into the equation. Of course, you could add carpets/rugs/slippers etc into the equation. The SIG adds that little bit of insulation.

The biggest thing, however, is that essentially, the SIG is still a part of the tent, and if the rest of the tent is dry at pack up, your SIG wont be! It'll need drying, and quite possibly (read almost certainly) cleaning, before you can roll up the tent and bag it up.
With a SIG, The tent is already clean and dry, and it can go straight into it's bag, while the SIG can be rolled up, bunged in a bin liner, and laid out at home (if you have a garden, of course) later, when you can be ar5ed!!!

Even if your whole tent is wet, and you have to bag it, take it home, then get it out again to dry it off, at least the underside is not caked in mud, grass and bits of dead animals!! It's all on the SIG, which is a lot easier to deal with than 35kg of polycotton!!

EDIT:
After all that, I've misread the OP!!

In that case, my first paragraph still stands.... if you can pitch on a dry footprint sheet, it is better than doing so on a wet footprint sheet. Not always possible though, when pitching in the rain.... but not the end of the world. The SIG will remain clean, at least, and will require a quick towelling as you roll it up ready for bagging.
As suns says, always make sure no footprint is sticking out, otherwise it will continue to collect water (rain) even once the tent is on top!

From experience there will be a bad smell afer a few days as it will never be able to dry, also if it is very wet it does eventually start to seep through the sig of your tent.  Yes - I know thats not supposed to happen but believe me it does!!

If you do not use a footprint the pressure of standing on the sewn in groundsheet on a wet floor will push and water into the ground. If you trap a lot of water between the footprint and the sewn in groundsheet the pressure would be much greater and it is possible for water to seep in through the sewn in groundsheet. This is why a fitted footprint that is a little bit smaller than the tent is the way to go. Saying that I would much prefer a good footprint than not for all the reasons mentioned above.
