I've sewn fabric onto my canvas bell tent when fitting the flashing kit for the woodburner, so there are lines of stitching all over the place. I wondered if it would let in water but so far I've only seen a little beading through once during very heavy rain.
On the other hand, I have a canvas bucket (I don't really know why - it just looked nice!) and it will carry water but can't be used to store it as the water drains out through the line of stitching down the side. Not a fair comparison perhaps as a tent wouldn't have that pressure of water on it.
Conclusion: be careful what you do. If water does get through maybe seam sealer would fix it, although it wouldn't look pretty on the canvas.
I'm wanting to put some flaps into the mud walls in the rear half of our Guadeloupe. I wouldn't do it myself, anyone know of a place in the Yorkshire area that does tent repairs/mods?
The other company to try (a bit further away) maybe The Canvas Repair Centre in Burton On Trent. Mucker another UK Campsite member used them for a repair to his tent. Looking at the pictures he posted they seemed to have done a good job.

Hi thanks for the replies. The flaps are just to add a little more ventilation. Even though the Guad is cotton, I find it can get a bit stuffy if the sun is up. Also, during heavy rain through the night, we do get condensation on the inside of the flysheet. I think this is because cotton canvas can't breathe once its soaked so condensation can build up if its wet for long periods. The flaps in the mud walls will not affect the stability and will just allow a bit more air in.
Hi andy I've got the smaller Noumea, so would be very interested if you manage to get it done, the flaps in my 3m bell make a big difference, and i would love some in my Noumea.
