can anyone give me any information as to why ,, pitches for tents are charged by the size and berth of your tent ? I understand the fundamentals i.e ,,, size and space = less or more tents on site .. so I arrive at my point , I have an horizon 8 tent with side extension ... the 8 bit ,, correct me if I m wrong means berth which also equates to persons ,, who can comfortably sleep in the tent ,,, with me so far ? I don't mind paying for a pitch for a larger tent because it is a larger tent which incidentally is an 8 berth tent ,, why then do campsites feel the need to also charge me for children ,, most campsites charge is inclusive of 2 adults ,, anything over that is an extra ,,, hmmmmm ,,, I have an 8 man tent which I am paying extra for already ,, why am I getting charged for my children to take space up in my 8 berth tent that I have already payed extra for ,, what with it being a large tent and taking up a large amount of space ,, enough for 8 people in fact ,,,,, why oh why is this the common policy on most sites ,,, anyone had this problem or shed some light as to why this practice happens ,, please let me know ,,,
if I wanted to camp just with my wife I would of bought a 2 berth tent,, but I want my children to be future campers ,, don t u get this campsites !!!!

Yep, what brickiemum said. Not all sites charge the same way, vote with your feet and find one you prefer. We once were looking into one, and they wanted £12 per night for the tent on its own, and then occupants were charged accordingly. Now, im not being funny, my Vermont is very very good, but it is NEVER gonna walk itself to the site and pitch itself, so it seemed like a really silly way of pricing, to us. Needless to say we didnt go there, and wont ever be, while the price structure remains that way. Luckily for us, there are an abundance of other lovely sites whose charges make sense :)

Surely pitches are a certain size and a certain price. Say 10 x5 on which your large tent fits should they then say ok let's put 2 small tents on the pitch. Or am just getting confused

Or are you paying for an extra large pitch because your tent won't fit on a standard sized pitch.

Lots of campsite don't have set pitches but a big field you camp in (much nicer if you ask me ! ). So I'd imagine if everyone pitched up with enormous tents they'd be able to fit less people in so they ask you to pay more. Do however think its a bit of a con if you are a big family, however there are plenty on this forum who use big tents and there are only 1 or 2 of them. Bigger tents also mean more wear and tear on the grass.
However, as pointed out lots of different pricing structures so you should be able to find a campsite that doesnt have a pricing structure you dislike

I think it is fair to charge according to both the tent size and the number of occupants, as both are relevant to the costs of running the site.

That way, 2 people in a large tent pay more than 2 people in a small tent but less than 8 people in a large tent, all contributory factors to the costs of ground and facility maintenance.

I think the occupancy charge is to do with use of facilities, heat and water etc. size of tent charge to do with amount of tents the can get on the site.

I have to say there are some pricing systems that confuse the heck out of me

You're not kidding!

Started getting a price for a site once. Started out being £10 per night, but by the time we had added up for two adults, one insane dog, one car, one trailer and leccy, it ended up being £29 per night!

Sod that!

We're off to Rushmere farm at Coleford next weekend. Tent is free, car is free, trailer is free, insane dog is free, just £6 per person and £4 a night for leccy.

Even I can work that out

I've said before I like to choose sites which charge per pitch and that's it however if they charge x per tent then y per person and it equals to what I am willing to pay I'm happy with that too.

As a family of 5 most sites that charge per extra person etc soon mount up out of our budget however a bit of research on here and I can usually find a suitably priced site in the area we want even if it doesn't have beach access, it's a small sacrifice.

I would like to see a site that charges per person and has an allowance of tent space (say 4m square) per person then extra per metre of tent over allowance but think even that could get pricey.

So a family of five would be allowed 80 square metres?

I think sites either go down the per person route or pitch route depending on whether they are aiming to encourage/discourage certain campers.

A quiet site, not wanting groups and not marketed to family campers with children tend to opt for per person charges, making it around £15-£20 for a couple but in excess of £30-40 for a large unit. Some sites will charge as much as £3 per dog per night too. They may also charge a higher rate for a large pitch.

A site with perhaps a bar, activities, a shop etc will want to bring in larger groups so that on-site spend is maximised. Thus they tend to charge by pitch and not by number of persons.

Just a theory

Nice idea but no should be 20 square metres so a 4m x 5m tent, should have put 4 square metres
