Hi everyone - we are going on our 2nd camping trip tomorrow for the weekend and with the weather forecast I think it will either make us both love camping or put us off all together..anyway I digress, We have an electric coolbox which was great and this time we are thinking of taking a normal coolbag with ice packs in.. Years ago when I went camping as a kid you took your icepacks to a freezer on the site froze them then swapped them the next morning with your spares..is this the same "etiquette" now or have things changed ? Sorry if this is a really stupid question
Not a stupid question at all. However, it all depends on the site you are staying on, some do offer this service, but some don't. The best thing to do is contact the site directly and ask them.
Agreed not a stupid question. Most sites will freeze icepacks for you even try freezing a plastic water bottle about 90% filled with water as an extra icepack.
one of the prerequisites for any campsite we stay at is that there must be an icepack freezing facility...when checking out the campsite search on here, make sure to scan thru the reviews members have left as often they will mention if things like icepack freezing are available even if the official website for the campsite has forgotten to mention it...

Some sites will re-freeze your ice packs (usually for a small charge), others will only "rent" you their packs (again for a small charge and usually a refundable deposit). Either way, you get freshly frozen ice packs... most sites do offer this in one form or another.
Some sites will let you refreeze your blocks for free by providing freezers for their customers to use free of charge.
Therefore, I would advise ringing up the camp site and enquire the kind of service they offer if any.

Oh and if you do take your ice packs remember to get a permanent marker and write your surname on them before you go. Imagine a freezer full of ice packs, they all look the same! I like to know which are mine.

We pop ours in a clear plastic bag with one of those clips on it, that way they tend to be left and not moved all around the freezer. Also agree that marking yours with your name is a good idea.
You could go old school and just buy ice, we put two bags on top of our stuff at the start and then usually add a new bag every day or two.
I would consider spending the money and getting a decent coolbox rather than the cool bag, you will easily be able to keep acouple of bags of ice frozen for the weekend in even the hottest weather.
As already mentioned get a decent coolbox like a Colemen Extreme, Kampa Evo Icehouse (we've got one and it's brill, ebay is your friend if you're looking for one) or an Igloo.
This reminds me, does anyone know if Hop Farm has a freezer for icepacks?
