Is there any rule of thumb as to how far away your campfire or barbecue should be from your tent door? A lot of people would feel that campfires or barbecues are an essential part of camping but I was quite worried on my camping trip last weekend to see people using barbecues in their porch in front of a tent with a SIG. Is there an acceptable safe distance?

I would not put a bbq in a tent porch unless you want your tent to burn down.

I would say have a bbq far enough so no sparks can reach your tent. A bbq could stay hot even when you go to bed.
As long as its ouside I cant see carbon monoxide getting into your tent.

Carbon monoxide isn't a problem in a well ventilated area so a porch would be safe enough in that respect. But the fire risk of having a BBQ that close to your tent is immense. Plus of course any sparks would make some interesting lacy effects in your flysheet.

The basic rule of thumb for both BBQs and fires is to have them far enough from your tent that stray sparks can't reach it. How far is that? It depends...but I personally aim for about the length of my estate car which is what...twelve feet or so?....for a small fire. My BBQ is gas so less of a problem but I still wouldn't bring it up close to the tent.

I've always got a bucket of water sitting next to the tent btw, old style habit here but one that should still happen if you're having an open fire. If nothing else you can stick your hand in it when you burn yourself but its chief use is to put out smouldering fires or sparks or, if your tent starts to smoulder, that too. Plus you use it to douse the fire when you go to bed. BBQs should be doused properly too if you're going to leave them unattended when still hot, just in case someone or their dog bangs into it when its dark.

Since reading a post on here I also have a water bucket.

Ive used them in the rain in a tent porch but always put them out with water and dispose of remaining coal before I go to bed and ventilate tent well.

On a pitch with a fire pit...My tent is pitched as far away as possible from the pit...

On a beach site...as far down the beach(tide line) as it's safe to go....Giving consideration to my(and others)tent and prevailing winds...

Was a bit concerned the other week to see folk using BBQ stands as makeshift fires right outside their tents in a densely populated area with other tents close by....Not a good idea for so many reasons..........

I have seen gas patio heaters used in caravan awnings which are all zipped up.They must be poisoning themselves with carbon monoxide.
