As a total newbie just wanted to know thoughts on joining the camping and caravan club. I am seeing that they accept dogs at all sites and the places look quite good but is it worth the money and are some of the stories of a stuck up attitude valid.

Never had any problems, in fact people usually very friendly! We tend to use the rally sites and temporary holiday sites though, as this means we can afford more weekends away. Another advantage is you don't have to book for most of the rallies and THS so can go where the weather is good.

This point comes up a lot and, as always, you'll get a 50/50 split of replies. You need to work out if it works for you, for me c&cc club sites still work out quite expensive when you add on the yearly membership and cl's aren't my thing.

we are members of the C&CC and have never had any problems with any of the sites we've stayed at, with the wardens who run them or the other campers who stay on them...we tend to use the C&CC sites for quick weekend breaks or overnight stays and find them very useful...

You're talking of the Camping and Caravanning Club (quite often on here abbreviated to C&CC). I think the stories of "stuck up attitude" you hear of refer to the Caravan Club (CC) although to be fair I don't think there'e even that much of it in the CC. C&CC sites can often be a bit more informal than the CC which on the whole are more neat and tidy in their layout, which to some might look as if they are a bit more stuck up (but of course they're not really aimed at tent camping).
C&CC sites are perhaps a bit less "free and easy" than some commercial sites where anything goes; they do have "rules", which to some may appear to be a bit restrictive and stuck up, but actually we've found the C&CC sites to be generally well managed and not at all stuckup. At the end of the day, it all depends on the sort of person you are.

I used to be a member of the C&CC (only for a couple of years), but stopped. The main sites were lovely, but we just don't camp enough to make it worthwhile.

We prefer the smaller Certificated sites, and all the ones I have encountered accept non C&CC members members without any problem...

If you're interested, and there's some main C&CC sites that you want to visit, you could take out a year's membership and review it after that.

We have been members of the C&CC for about 5 years and find it very worthwhile. We tend to like peaceful camping and that is what you get. Yes sometimes it's a little regimented I suppose but the rules suit us. We have used 5 sites this year and have had no problems with any. All very well run and very tidy.

Thanks for the advice from all of you. I. Think I ment to say regimented rather then stuck up. I am glad to hear that the C&CC are more laid back and will be investing in a membership in the near future.

I joined at the Luss site on my way north in '99, and that site and the Oban site were both excellent, not overcrowded, clean facilities. However, I found it wasn't worth my while for the number of times I managed to get away so I didn't renew. The Site directory has come in handy since, though!
