As some of you will know I won an Outwell California Highway awning to attach to my van last week!
Very keen to try it out iv headed down to Blackpool where iv pitched on a small basic but lovely campsite called High Bank Farm. There's a mixture of caravans and tents here.
Very reasonable at £12 a night for me, van, awning & EHU included.
It's 2 miles from Blackpool town centre where I'm going shortly for a walk around & get a pint & fish n chips!
First impressions of this awning?
Well considering its £950 list price new to include the £100 bedroom pod, I cannot believe anyone would pay that for this!!!.
Why?
Because its a Polyester tent with fibreglass roof poles & steel legs with a zip in/out groundsheet and a built in canopy!
To make it an awning - you get a large piece of polyester which goes over the roof of the " tent " and attaches to side of van to form a" connecting canopy ".
This is a £299 ish tent with a piece of material included and that's been marketed and sold as a £950 awning!!!.
I'm glad I only paid £266 for it!
I'm thinking of buying a couple of polycotton or cotton tarps and making a connecting tunnel using same method as this thing uses to connect van to my poly cotton tents!
Anyways full report and review to follow.
At £266 it's great. At £950 - it's a rip off!!!
Time for drinks n fish n chips now -)

Hi, Glad your awning is ok and what a bargain it was. I stayed at Highbank Farm a couple of year's ago it was a lovely little site hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.
Ps the site is lovely & very quiet but when I was trying to put the tent / awning up the resident chickens were very curious and all came running over and proceeded to walk over the tent / awning while it was lying on the ground & I was feeding the poles in.
They got very large claws on the feet!!!
The more I tried to hoosh them away the more the loved walking about on the tent!
Apart from their tallons I shudnt think their poop is good for tent fabric either!
Anyways alls good so far!

Isn't the connecting piece permanently attached to the awning?!

Hi, no it's not, it's a completely separate sheet which has both clips and toggles and can be attached to either side door of the " awning ( tent ! ) " I guess it's because some vans / campers / mh have the side door on left but others have it on the right. It also allows you to pitch the tent/awning facing either direction and still be able to connect to your vehicle.
Just like the bear lake side extension iv just bought! - it can be used on either side of the Lake tents.

Well, that sounds a bit faffy! So the Outwell California Highway could be used as a (not that great) stand-alone tent, as well as an awning?
I know the Khyam campervan and motorhome drive away awnings have a permanently-attached tunnel part, so just assumed every manufacturer would do the same.
It really is! The ONLY difference is its got this large ( guesstimate 6m x 3m ) piece of polyester which you throw ( fun in a windy day esp throwing against the wind lol ) over the roof of the tent and attach other side to your vehicle - hey presto! You now have an awning!!!
It really is that basic!
And they charge £950 for it new with bedroom pod ( sold separately!!! - can you imagine buying a wolf lake tent then being told Oh, you want bedrooms in addition ?!? - that's an extra £100!!! ) lol
I dunno how many of them they sell but honestly seeing it like this in real life by having bought one, if I'd known it was this basic I' wouldn't have bothered!!!
