Hi i really want to take my family camping but i don't drive in the past we have talked friends and family into coming camping with us but none of our friends want to camp again so my question is would it be possible to camp without a car i could get a friend to drop us off and pick us up so that's not a problem is there any reason we carnt camp without a car x

There are a few people on here who camp without a car. They will be able to advise, better than me.   The tent will an issue depending on how many you.   Imagine you can split the tent between
everyone.   Someone carry fly sheet, another the inner and someone the poles.   A shopping trolley used for the equipment, rucksacks for clothes and other bits and use self-inflating mats. Suitcase stove, would be a handy size, easily fit in a trolley, everyone could easily carry their own cutlery, bowles, plates, ect. Cook one pot meals, or nest of pans. You can always take a tarp to sit under if it rains.
This worked well for me. I was able to have 2 adults and 4 young teens under minę.     Nab a picnic table if the campsite provides these. Invaluable.

My OH drops me, kids and kit off when we go camping and comes home. Your choice of site may be different than if you've got a car at your disposal but other than that it shouldn't change anything. As we all like walking, the sites we choose always have a lot of walking routes around with little else, but that's what we're after

If you can get someone to drop you off and pick you up then the only thing to worry about is if there is enough to do within walking distance, or on public transport. Oh depending on how long you are going for don't forget to think about where you would get staples like bread and milk.

Some campsites in France (http://www.eurocamp.co.uk/) provide pre erected and equipped tents, all you need do is get there by train.
You would have to carry your personal kit, if you have bikes without rear suspension you can add carriers and panniers, and get around France on local trains. Families that camp and cycle together always look happy.
Never carry more clothes than you have to, wear shorts or speedos as much as possible and buy new tee shirts to come home in.
Fussy eaters will starve as you will only be able to eat what you can find in local shops. On the coast try moules frittes (muscles and chips), cheap and nutritious.

The last thing I want to do when camping is drive from one place to another. Most of the campsites I go to are within walking distance of the area or interest that I have gone to see. So yes, if you have someone to drop you off and pick you up, and providing you choose campsites that aren't in the middle of nowhere, camping without a car is no problem.

I wish I had somebody to drop me off and pick me up...wouldn't need to drive at all then...even better if they can erect the tent for me

Thanks everyone that's it were going thinking in going to book south cliff in brid because when we have been before its always been lovely plus its close to beach and has easy access to transport to the shops so daughter will be happy :D x

You are lucky having someone to drive you :) I go camping by train - rucksack with clothes and cooking gear, and trolley for tent and SIM. It means I am limited where I can go roll on 2015 when the train will go from Wareham to Swanage!

Hi Nikki83

Have you thought of hiring a pre-errected tent, then all you need to carry are your personal items. Just a thought but as the tent is the heaviest item it may work.

I go camping mostly on the bus...Rucksack and sometimes a trolly carrying a few extra comforts...It can be done with the family as well...A wee bit of forward planning re bus timetables in the area your visiting etc and your sorted...Worst thing for me is the hike to the nearest shop if I run out of something while on site...
