In 2006-7 I looked at a lot of the MPV type cars.
Personally, I didn't like the Renault because it felt very plasticky and flimsy compared to others. The only one I liked less was the Citroen.
I ended up getting a Ford Smax because it was a bit more of a car than a van. It's a bit lower than many of the MPVs, but it still has a huge boot as long as you don't have all seven seats up. If you put all seven seats up, there is room for shopping, OR a buggy, but definitely not a tent and camping stuff.
My other would be contender was the Volkswagon - is it the Tuareg or the Touran. Whichever is the bigger. From memory, I think I liked that one a little bit better, but not enough to justify the price difference.
The Smax is not my favourite car I've ever had though. It's long, and still quite wide, so it's a bit of a pain to park. And the parking sensors are utterly useless and have never worked properly. And I can't even disable them to stop them randomly beeping at me. It doesn't come with a spare tyre, just a can of foam. However it's now five years old, and has been reliable so far. No problems other than the parking sensors. I get about 35mpg in my 2.0L diesel where I live. But when I go on holiday, I get about 48mpg.
Don't get the 1.8L diesel, it's goes like a slug. And if you can, the 2.2L would probably be a lot better than my engine. It's a bit slow in first and second. Oh, and it's useless in snow. Absolutely completely and utterly useless. It sees a snowflake and starts skating about like Bambi on ice, I've never driven anything as bad.
My favourite car would have to be my Skoda Fabia, loved that car, but Skoda didn't do a decent sized MPV at the time. Not sure if they do now.

I'd agree with that. Far less to go wrong on a petrol, compared to a modern EFI/Turbo diesel. Whilst it won't do as many mpg, everything else is cheaper - servicing, fuel, parts and so on.
Same here. I had a Mondeo turbo diesel and I could have had a world cruise with the money I spent on repairs.
I also loathe Renaults with a vengeance. I had a lovely 16TS in the 1970s which was good as gold, but haven't known a reliable one since then. I've been stranded by Renault 5s (2 different ones), a Megane coupe (in a tiny Devon lane the recovery truck couldn't find) a Scenic (with 5 dogs on board, at the side of the M4 - not funny), a Laguna (on the M40) and a Clio, on a steep and winding slip road.
None of them were mine, and if I'm going anywhere with a friend, I insist we go in my car if theirs is a Renault.
