we two have been camping in tents for over 40 years. we now use a small gas fire to warm up the tent for an hour before we go to bed. we use two top of the range sleeping bags and sleep naturally.
not bad for a couple of oldies

what will you do if it really gets cold
        still flying free

at damian - depends on the tent!

my little trout lake 4 is toasty with my fan heater. but my concorde L isnt toasty the fan heater just takes the chill off, its a much bigger space to heat.

folks who say Polycotton is warm when its cold - really?
i got 3 of them and its nothing to do with the polycotton - its the size of the tent and amount of air inside that needs warming up! in fact when the polycotton is dry the weave opens up and lets the heat out!!!.

the concorde L needs 2 fan heaters to get it as warm inside as i can get the trout lake4!

where u been hiding damian L - not seen u posting since u were getting the 49.99 tent from halfords and a candle to cook on!

I've been hiding in Go Outdoors! I'm over £2000 lighter now, all mid range equipment now, decent stoves, sleeping bags, tents etc. The good people here decided the rule was, I go to work earn my money and they all virtually spend it for me!

I'm planning on doing a little 2013 recap with pics post ready to see how 2014 compares.

at damian L - ahhhh uv seen the light and followed it to the camping shops - remember Go isnt the only shop to look at!
its important to check ALL the others too - lots of things in other camping shops that you wont find in go!.

i found this lovely wood table in a independant camping shop near blackpool :-

your zenobia tent is available in green this year i see from the latest Go brochure that came thru my letterbox this morning!.
2000.00 ? - well done! you could have given that money to Intasun / Thomas cook etc and all you d have was fotos of a 1 week holiday in the costa blanca / benidorm - instead you ll have countless holidays now in your tent and camping eqpt!
well done! - cant wait to see your pics!

can i pose a question - how to stay cool in a tent - both day and night

never have an issue at night - rarely wear anything and never zip up the bag - think i have a high core temperature.
as a festival goer often like a nap in afternoon buy tent way to hot - looking at the outwell roof protecter for our monty 6p. any tips?

From experiance camping when it was -6 at night, with a young family.

Sleeping: Good quality SIM's, good quality goose down sleeping bags. You'll never be cold.

Tent: Footprint and carpet, vents closed as much as possible, curtains up, keep the heat in. EHU, fan heater, carfully placed, on thermostat.

You: If your going to be sitting around not being that active then again a good quality goose down jacket will keep you super warm, best insulator weight for weight. You can't improve on 4.4 billion years of evolution. Merino wool makes a fine base layer, great as thermal bottoms and socks also, warm and keeps fresh.  Again, you can't improve on natural materials for insualtion for this sort of actvity. Sadly expensive but worth every penny for performance and results.

Put it this way, high altitude climbers use down as insulation against sub zero temps becuase it works.

Cheers,

Porbeagle

We used to put fleece blankets under airbed and over. HOt water bottle in bag and 2 sleeping bags, fleece pj's and fleece blanket over the top.

That was in summer too sleeping was the only thing I didn't like about camping.

Forgot to say, we had a heater too. First one awake would plug it in on a morning and we would put it on when chilly at night.

On EHU a fan heater...Non EHU Layers of clothing and sat under a tarp by the fire...Amazing how much heat can be retained from a wood fire under a tarp...In my small tent gas stove on for ten mins to heat the tent while I get ready for bed (Inner tent door and vents opened for ventilation) same in the morning when I get up...Good 3-4 season s/bag...And on colder nights I will have base layers on...Or have been known to remove all money/keys/wallet etc from my trousers and sleep in my clothes...

Granted you can look a bit crumpled in the morning doing that...But hey...I'm not on a campsite to win a fashion comp...The creases soon smooth out when your up and about...And you do away with that wee cold bit getting undressed/dressed evening and morning????

Jelboy.
