Help!
In search of bell tents or similar for an educational excursion for a home school group.
We've been looking around and not sure we can stretch to 4/500 gbp per tent. Are there any alternatives or people selling second hand?
Second hand you'll find they don't depreciate much, I've seen some mouldy messes go for over £100! I think you may be better to add details of your group (amount & age range) and intended usage (several/few, short/long excursions, sleeping only/sleep & live or even cook & time of year) and whether they are 'tents for life' or you intend selling them at the end of the season. From these people can recommend other options.
Whilst I love my bell tents frame or tunnel tents can be much more practical and definitely more affordable if bought second hand.
Cheap bell tents in good condition don't exist, unfortunately!
Polyester tents will be far cheaper (new & second hand).
If you are fixed on cotton, places like eBay, preloved or the adverts on here might be your best bet - but depending on how many tents you're after, it can take a while for the right ones to turn up!
The only reasonably priced secondhand canvas tents are older frame tents, these can sometimes be in good condition but need to be checked very carefully for condition of canvas & that poles are all present before payment. As pointed out, best bet is just cheap tunnel tents. If you want to buy several a supplier might give you discount.
As a Scout I used to use Icelandic tents which sleep 6-8 persons.
They are made by Blacks of Greenock who have just reintroduced bell tents the Solace I & II. Selling at under £400 or £500 each and housing up to 6 or 8 adults.
The ridge tents are cheaper than bell tents because of their simpler construction. Coming in at £400 for an 8 man tent.
If you want to go cheaper than this you will need a lighter synthetic fabric tent using arched bendy poles, ie domes or tunnels.
I spent 2 months looking for a reasonable priced used Bell tent last year. Im afraid they don't seem to exist. We ended up buying new one. You can get a polyester bell from boutique tents which are far cheaper if that's the style you want. link
We have a 5m soulpad hybrid and bell tents are all pretty much the same from one brand to the next of similar spec.
We are a family of 5 and tend to cosy up in a 4m bell tent in the cooler months and spread out in the 5m May - Oct.
