So tent has come out today for our first camping weekend and one of the fibre glass poles have split. Whats the best thing to do in terms of replacing full thing or repairing? How easy is it to do for someone who hasnt a clue?

It's easy but fiddly to do as you need to re thread the elastic through again which took me an age to suss.

Take the split pole or poles to your local camping shop, so you can see what size you need, and get a new elastic threading kit too.

I used a piece of thin wire from a DIY shop attached to the elastic with strong gaffa tape and pushed and pulled the wire with a pair of pliers though the poles.
Took me a while to get the technique but I managed to replace 3 fibre glass sections in my poles last year.

Some one else may pop up with a better way of doing things, but good luck,

As above (and more advice in this and other (using the Search button) threads).

Rather than using a needle though, having threaded the first section (the one with two ferrules) by dropping the cord through, I usually wrap some of it round my fingers in a figure-of-eight to stop it springing back then drop the free end through the next section, and so on. This assumes that the diameter of the cord is rather less than the inside diameter of the pole, and that circulation in fingertips is not seriously compromised!

Go to a fishing shop and get a pole elastic diamond threader. Made for the job.

We fish with a carbon fibre pole, often 14metres long which pulls apart into sections of about 4 to 5 feet.

There is elastic threaded through the top 2 or 3 sections, stopped at the bottom and attached to a thin piece of line at the top. When a fish is hooked the elastic pulls out, is played until it tires then landed and put back.

The diamond threader pulls the elestic through the top sections which are really thin.

You can always take the pole to go outdoors and they will do it all for you for around 4 pound a pole and all in a day. Sometimes if they are not busy even while you wait.

I use the same technique as navver above...But any long piece of thin wire with a loop on the end will do the same job....

Remember when removing the split pole to tie a knot in the elastic at the end of the next pole down or you could end up with several pole sections de elasticated!!!

The elastic(under tension) has a habit of worming its way through several other poles if you don't have it anchored in some way....

If you burn the end of the cord, it makes it easy to just push the cord through the pole.

You can buy repair kits. If you are in the midlands, try Tentspares of Hinckley - I've no connection except as a satisfied customer.

It's easy to reassemble poles although it can be fiddly.

My tent canopy has a fibre glass pole which hubby forced & the corner ferrule snapped. I bought steel replacements from Tentspares & my son took them into work & bent them to right angle for me. I also re threaded it using their re threading kit, so now I have steel corners, much stronger than before.

You can repair a tent pole with gaffer tape. I did that to one of my tent poles and carried on using it for another four years. It depends on the pole sleeve, if the pole is a snug fit through it anyway you don't want to add any bulk.

Must admit I cheat and have two spare poles in the tent bag in case needed, don't think I would like to spend to much time away from home repairing the poles, much easier to do at home at your liesure
