Hi, 'Nick M'...
Firstly, welcome to the U.K.C.S. website... As far as the 'Tourer 400' goes, well I've never had one, though for the last five years I've owned 'Khyam Ridgidome' tents. First the old style 'Classic XXL' for three years and more recently the smaller 'Classic XL'. They really are top class tents in all ways, they can stand up to anything our weather throws at them and they are simplicity itself to pitch single handed. The 'Classic XXL' is a bit bigger than the 'Tourer 400' and easily accomodates two adults and three kids. I know this because I 'passed on' my 'Classic XXL' to friends with a young family and they think it's brilliant. A testimony to it's quality, is the fact that it's still in 'A1' condition at five years old!... Now, with the 'Khyam Ridgidomes' there is the added advantage that as your family grows, so can the tent!... "Khyam" now do a 'Classic Annexe' which fits neatly to the main tent and gives a huge amount of extra living space (9 sq. metres)... At £350 the 'Classic XXL' is not cheap, but you're getting a top quality tent for your money... As I mentioned earlier, you could add the annexe at a later date, as your kids get bigger, it's a brilliant bit of kit and costs only £100... Though the 'Classic XXL' is a bit more expensive to buy, I think it's a better tent and well worth the extra cost... Anyway, I hope you and your family enjoy your camping, in whichever tent you choose... Andy...

I have the Tourer 400, I think it is a great tent. I use it with my 8 year old son so absolutely bags of room! We sleep head away from the door area, feet towards the door. Loads of room for 2 single airbeds or in our case 1 double (Coleman Comfort) and a camp bed. I chose this over the XL as I preferred the vis a vis sleeping arrangement. When my son is older I think he will prefer to be at the other end of the tent away from me, rather than with a screen between us (as the XL). I have 2 friends who use this tent with 3 young children. They are happy with the size. I love the big Khyams but my only worry would be on sites with smaller pitches, with the Tourer 400 you have plenty of living space but not too huge a tent. Although when I camped with a friend with a small tent she called the 400 'Southfork!'. I have a small car and it packs up nicely into one bag so transporting it is not a problem. A porch would be nice but not available at the moment. I actually visited my local camping stockist today and they said there may be a porch attachment available next year. I erect it on my own which only takes a short time, pegging out is a bit longer as with all tents. I am thinking of buying a utility tent to keep all my kitchen stuff in to free up the living area but don't necessarily need one. I use both bedroom pods, one as a toilet/storage pod at the moment. I was looking at the XXL's today in fact and they are similar shapes but larger bedrooms and more headspace. I am almost 5' 9" and find the headroom sufficient. I chose it because I knew I would be erecting it single handed and it has been fine. Not cheap for a starter tent but even though I am always looking for something better I don't think I could get anything more suitable for my needs. Good luck with your choice!

ColemanBig Cypress
£174.99 Was £349.99 — Save £175
Having been seduced by all the good things said about Khyams, we strayed on to web-sites selling other makes of tent (!!) Saw a Coleman Big Cypress 8 man tent (looks great on the photo) (and sounds good on features) for £175 (reduced from £350) and wondered why should we pay such a lot for a Khyam? Surely Khyams aren't that much better than other quality makes (Cloeman is a quality make, isn't it?). Can anyone enlighten me - is the smaller Khyam worth the extra cost? Is the Coleman I refer too so inferior? Is it all about the quick erect system? If so, how much longer will the Coleman take me to put up. Grateful for your advice. Thanks. Nick.

I've never seen a 'Coleman Cypress' in a camping suppliers or on a site. I have seen a few other 'Coleman tents' about on site ie. 'Quadspace' & 'Sahara' and they look fine.
Sorry Nick, don't know anything about the 'Cypress' range...

As far as I know Khyam are the only tents with the quick erect system, that's why you are paying more for them. I went for a Khyam as I have to erect it alone. You could probably get more tent for your money is erecting it is not a problem. Saying that I would still highly recommend!

I got my Tourer 400 as an ex-display model from Aspinalls for £110, which was a massive saving over rrp.
Dont know when they will have their next batch in though?

I recently bought a Colemans Big Cypress from Black's at the same price as you mention. It's one of the best family tent bargains I've seen.
Coleman's is as you say a company which makes quality kit you can trust: I've had a Colemans Peak 1 Dual Fuel Stove which has given me 12 years' superb service when camping on my motorcycle. Funny you should mention Khyam as I have had for the same period of time a Khyam 3-man tent and the company's quick erect design is a fantastic feature.
When I got my family into camping this summer (with the help of a borrowed tent) I was really keen on getting a large Khyam - possibly the Ultimate Classic because it had loads of space - but then having forked out a fair wedge of cash on equipment, I realised the £500-odd asking price was simply too much money.
Onto the Big Cypress: It is a superb tent - and I'm talking from many years of camping experience: It has more than enough ceiling height, loads of room in the central space, a very very generous porch which allowed me to do cooking in, fully sealed-in groundsheet. In other words, when the inner doors are closed, nothing gets in, especially insects! The way the pods are placed means you have the feeling of space in the central living space - it also has zipped windows along with flyscreen and plain window covers. And so many little touches which give you that sensation of quality - compare that with the cheap giant 'argos' tents which will probably fall apart after two seasons.
As to putting it up. Do not attempt alone unless you have lots of time on your hands and no hungry kids to feed before bedtime. The guide recommended 80 minutes and they were correct. Poles are colour coded, but the sewn-in instructions leave too much to the imagination - a blow-by blow idiots guide would have been much more useful. But again, it's all quality: The poles are thick and very strong, the pegs are thick and strong.
No doubt the Kyam is also seriously good quality kit, but for £175 the Big Cypress is superb.

It does look a great tent but sleeps 8, I thought the original poster was after a small family tent. Depends on personal preference, I like space around me on site so would naturally go for a smaller kit.

But we all know the reality is that if you're just using the sleeping pods they'll comfortably house two in each. And you have the provision for sleeping twice as many.
My personal preference for tent space vs. open space is that you need to plan on the basis of bad weather and I've tried a small family tent in bad weather with hyperactive kids and it's not funny. Better to have space for the kids if it rains and if it's fine weather then there's loads of room outdoors!
