Great weather all weekend but then Saturday night over the space of an hour the wind started and never stopped. It didn't help that our site was on the moors at the top of a hill! I've never heard anything like it! We heard at least 2 other tents meet their demise (the occupants were okay), Ours is a Hi Gear Gobi 4 and even though it isn't an expensive tent it did us proud. We had one pole that popped out twice but that was it. The wind was coming from all directions constantly with no let up, along with constant gusts. We did think that we may have to pack up in the early hours or even abandon and go back later and hope it was still there. Over 7 hours later it wasn't letting up so we decided to pack up at 7am as the forecast showed it was going to get stronger. Luckily our pack up went without a hitch (it was all hands on deck and throw everything in the van to sort out at home!) A few miles down the road it was just a bit breezy! Home and sleep for a few hours enjoying the peace! The campsite owners phoned us as we got home to check we were okay, as they did with others that packed up early, it had been really scary & I thought it would put me off but after a good sort out today I can't wait to get back out there!

About 20 years ago we were at Shell Island in our canvas relum chalet tent. The wind was picking up when we went to bed. It reached gale force all night. We had a very sleepless night. At one stage we were hanging onto the poles. The next morning we had a look round the site. There were absolutely loads of wrecked tents. It was heart breaking to see! We got away with one bent pole!! The winds were still gale force, and had to decide whether to attempt getting the tent down or just to leave it there. We asked some other campers if they woild help us. It took 5 of us to get itdown, as we ccouldn't hold onto the canvas in the gusts. I can't describe how scarey that night was. We threw it all into the trailer and went home, all soaked to the skin, but we survived!!!!!

I had a similar experience at Shell island. The Friday and Saturday of our weekend were glorious. Overnight on the Saturday the wind and storm started. My 3 decent tents were undamaged but a cheaper tent suffered major pole damage and the gazebo was trashed.

We decided to pack up. Chucked everything into the cars and set off for home, still in our PJ's and soaking wet.

This highlights the importance of pitching and pegging even when the conditions suggest it is not necessary!!

Had similar conditions over near Garstang, cpaalp . Relentless from Sunday morning. Those with gazebo's were soon into action, taking them down... followed by all but a couple of 'van awnings. I hear a couple of tents were lost at the other side of the site, and a few packed up and left early.

We stuck it out, having added extra guys to the tops of the poles... and stainless Delta's... but had a very unsettled Sunday night, to say the least! Finished striking camp around 11am yesterday, and the wind hadn't abated... 27 hours later!
Got away with a slight bend in one pole, which I straightened out.

Windiest yet, for us... by far!

In hindsight, we're glad of the experience... but I wouldn't recommend it!

Only time I have had bad wind (no laughing) while camping was when we camped right next to the Irish sea about 6 years ago. Bloody Norah Gale force winds and rain were atrocious.. awnings were being murdered, stuff fleeing about Willy nilly, I was in my Vango Sigma 300+ with wind break around it, only the wind brake poles broke and my little Vango never leaked or uprooted any tent pegs... Still using the Vango now, it's fab.
Glad you all were ok after the bad Windies (''')

Ahh Yes Shell island..

Remember being there the wind hitting gale force and trying to pack up.

All you heard as well was this ping sound where people tent pegs had been ripped out the ground.

Think they had some sort of elastic on the bottom of the tent which they pined down with pegs.

Was like a game of darts with the pegs.... lol

It is scary in a tent in the wind. Glad you survived in tact. Site owners sound great too

The worst part of our windy stay at ShellIsland was the tractor with a hugetrailer was the amount of wrecked tents being thrown in. The cafe was like a refugee camp. Felt so sorry for the families that had lost everything!

Thanks everyone for your replies, sorry not replied sooner been busy with work! Well it's not put me off as now planning where to go next! I must say that after that windy night I didn't think I'd be as quick to book the next trip, but after the event the bad things start to pale and you remember the laughs (and we had many of them the Easter weekend!)

I bought my DS a vango sigma 300 on the bases that it did not move an inch in strong winds, when I looked around the the tent display. Best time to look at tents,

We were on the Cumbrian coast that weekend - calm day, sat out in the evening, went to bed quiet as you like and then BANG! Wind came up instantly out of nowhere! Tent got a rattling right through Sunday night too - no casualties though - only three Outwell tents on the site.
