Never slept on the ground on one, but I'd say not, No!
A cheap 5cm one should be ample on a camp bed. Aldi/Lidl sometimes have them in for around the £10.99 mark.
We had them last year (on camp beds) and they were fine... a bit slippy though (nylon?), so consider holding them in place somehow, if you fidget!
We went for the made to measure elasticated fitted sheet... with valance!! But then, we're posh!!
... And don't forget... Camp beds are great for under-bed storage!

I have a cheap thin SIM on my camp bed and it is fine. The camp bed itself affords some comfort but the SIM just takes away that 'solid' feel of the stretched canvas. However, a really thick one would be luxurious I would imagine.
The last time I was in Tesco they had SIMs very cheap...I can't remember if they were £9.99 or £12.00 but somewhere around that price.
Yes a cheap 5cm one will be fine. I only have a 10cm one because I use it on the floor occassionally. The SIM just gives a bit of softness like a mattress would, rather than being on the hard canvas that has no give.

My wife has voiced concerns on the cold air under a campbed, is this really an issue?
The air wouldn't be any colder than the ground, and any half decent SIM means you cannot feel the cold ground, ergo you wont feel the cold air either. A lot of people use the underneath to store stuff anyway, but to be honest it shouldn't matter.

IMHO, when using a SIM on top of a camp bed, then a thinner SIM would be sufficient.
I only bought a good SIM as I "hoped" that one day I might need to use it on its own when I go camping with another person, as I could not fit 2 camp beds in the inner tent.

I use a camp end with a 5cm but found I got back ache, so just upgraded to a 10cm sim - what a difference with the comfort, but will know more next week when we're camping
