Hi all this is my first post after reading this forum for over a year now.
I have been camping for about 4 years and end of last year upgraded my tent for an airbeam tent.
Now this type of tent and many others cost well over a grand.
Im,going to a folkfestival in the summer and would like to take my new tent,I'm staying in a farmers field with 24 h security, but I'm thinking about putting a 10 m wire rope and lock on my tent, going to pass it though the ehu piont and out through the door then under the extension and back to the wheel of the car, leaving a note in the dash so don't drive off with tent attached.
What do you lot think over the top or should I take my old knackered tent that's now to small for family of 5.
If you are attending a folk festival I would be inclined to take the old knackered tent as I've heard too many horror stories in the past regarding drunken and clumsy people tripping up and damaging other peoples tents. Save the best tent for the proper camping trips away otherwise you may live to regret it.
Thanks for your reply
Starting to think maybe old tent might be best.
Should also point out that field is 5 mins from festival and off site just a very large field for people attending festival near by.
Cropredy by any chance? From the tales my mate tells me from his yearly visits I'd take the old one, there always seems to be copious amounts of alcohol involved
I don't think I would want to take anything of value to a festival or leave my tent in a farmers field. Most campsites at least have some form of security even if it's just the length of the driveway getting to it.
Just before Easter I booked a pitch on a farm campsite which according to Google maps was within the farm complex. I then discovered it was just a field off a main road well away from the farm buildings and with no security whatsoever. The gate from the road to the field was just an ordinary farm gate with no security and to make matters worse the only pitch they had available was right next to the gate! I might as well have left a sign on my tent saying, 'help yourself while I'm out'.

In my experience, Cropredy is one of the safest and most family-friendly festivals. The majority of the festival-goers are middle-aged and although the festival prides itself on it real ale bar I have not seen much drunken or rowdy behaviour there.
That said, the usual advice is to use a 'second best' tent at any music festival rather than a very expensive or brand-new tent. I tend to agree with that, but not everyone has a second tent of course.
Padlocking a tent is seldom worth while - zips can be ripped open easily - and a padlock may even be an incentive to thieves.
Our DD took our Quechua to a festival - came back one night to find a drunken youth asleep on it. Being a pop-up, it popped back up when they rolled him off it.
Hi all thanks for all your advice.
Looking like will have to take the old tent.
The whole point of putting wire cable and lock through ehu and back though door then to something secure, was to make it hard to steal,
not going to lock the doors up.
If someone wanted to steal it they would have to cut a 3m hole in the tent, making the tent un salable.
Or carry around 4f bolt crops.
