Many people, including myself, use waterproof backed picnic rugs in a tent with a sewn in groundsheet, although it doesn't necessarily have to be waterproof backed of course. These are pretty much the same material that proper tent carpets are made of.
My tent living area is 410cm x about 200cm and I use two 200cm x 200cm picnic rugs which just leaves 10cm uncovered at one side...no problem as that is where the table and other odds and ends go.
You could buy a proper tent carpet if you wish but they tend to be expensive. The downside of picnic rugs is that you may need more than one depending on the size of your tent which may, if you have kids and dogs, ruck up causing a trip hazzard.
Having to buy more than one picnic rug could, in some cases, work out more expensive than the proper carpet so you need to weigh up the pros and cons and do your sums.

Welcome to the forum, grahamwright, and many thanks for your link. Some absolute beauties there! I can see me coming to you when my Karsten arrives!
Tell me... would your prices include a fitting service? And I presume they come with underlay?
Oh, just one more thing... do they come with their own little carry bag?
Many thanks.

I found a tent carpet on a website that someone had mentioned on here last year. The carpet belonged to a totally different tent but was of a similar size (albeit a bit smaller) to our tent. Only paid £20 for it!! It goes right under the bedroom pods and has probably a 20cm gap around the sides but nothing that worries us.
For our much smaller Vango Icarus I found an offcut of normal carpet for £10 in our local Carpetright. Total luxury and it is bulky but so lovely to walk on proper carpet in the tent!! You obviously couldn't do that with a larger tent though.

We use the Outwell carpets in our two tents and they are fitted so ideal but pricey. The picnic mats arent as nice, but not far off either.
