Just a word of caution about traveling over night. We thought we would be clever and travel home thru the night from Exmoor. It seems that's when the highways agency seem to do all their resurfacing and pot hole repairs. We had so many diversions and all my sat nav seem to want to do was get me back on the same road it was murder when you have no idea where your going. It took us over 6 hours for a journey I would expect to do in about 4. So if you can find out if theres any overnight road repairs on your journey I would if I were you. As for the A30 being dual all the way, what a nice thought if it were true. Good luck. Geoff

Hell yes , last year we decided to made a last minute decision to leave on the Saturday afternoon rather than the Sunday morning to give ourselves a day at home
, before going back to work.

I can safely say it was the worst car journey I have ever had, firstly we underestimated how long it would take us to pack up, so instead of leaving Hayle at 5pm we finally got away at 9.30.

got stuck behind an accident, got stuck stuck in two roadworks where they convoyed you through and a massive diversion that was so badly signposted we ended up totally lost, including a couple of stops for 40winks, as we were both hallucinating we finally got back at 6.30am.

Don't underestimate the extra effort of nighttime driving, I have made several longer journeys than that in daylight and none have come close to that.

This thread is making me miss Devon/Cornwall  Been convincing hubster last night to go in September

Depending on which direction you are travelling from, if you are coming down the M5 and join the A30 then it's dual carriageway all the way to the turn off to Newquay (dependant on road works of course), if you are coming from Plymouth then there is a lot of single lane driving until you join the A30 at Bodmin.

The dual carriageway was finished quite a few years ago now, I used to deliver down in Cornwall and used the A30 on a regular basis, and it was so nice to travel goss moor on a dual carriageway.
