I'll second what everyone else said and I'm still at Hankakampa - I think we've all experienced something like that but lived to tell the tale and loved it anyway.

As for your security worry with the family - personally I feel safer on a campsite than I do at home! Not a lot can be kept secret on a campsite and anyone trying anything in the middle of the night would have to face an army of grumpy, rudely awoken campers since a single shout would wake most people up. If you have a tent where the bedrooms are separated by the living area then you'll probably have more peace of mind sleeping with the kids.

Enjoy!

I agree with the sleeping thing. Our first tent had 2 very separate pods but I felt a lot happier with our second with one big pod which could be separated with a zip sheet. I can see if they're sleeping or feel if they're too hot etc. I would also make sure they have something to do early in the morning especially if they're early risers so they don't wake everyone up. It depends on ages, colouring, doodle book, reading book. We always carry valuables with us or lock them in the car. I must say I too have always felt very safe. Your neighbours tend to know who belongs to which pitch.
