I apologies for being thick, but can someone tell me what we did wrong? We camped in France last year, 2 hot sunny weeks without rain. Packed tent up, all fine so we thought. Have unpacked it this weekend, a month ahead of our summer holiday and it's not fine. The guy ropes have black stuff on them, there are spots of mould inside on the bedroom floors and some inner walls. We're scrubbing it at the moment, the waterproofing seems fine, but we're not sure why it is mouldy. It was stored in the garage over the winter, also stored there the year before with no problems. Can you tell me where we went wrong oh wise campers?

Maybe the guys were a little damp and you might of had a bit of condensation inside your tent
Or the tent got damp being stored in the garage as this winter was more damp than cold than previous years either way hope you get it sorted which tent is it by the way your Vermont or vango

It's the Vermont (sob). Looks as though it's still waterproof anyway. Lemon and salt solution seems to have helped a lot, may need to repeat it later.

As above but something which never seems to get mentioned is things like food or drink inside a tent. Open a can of coke and the unseen spray can stick to the inside of the tent and voila...mould!

A tent stored in a garden shed can suffer with condensation due to periods of damp and then heat. This could also promote mould. It is a good idea to get a tent out of it's bag once a month to give it a good airing and check it over, not necessarily to erect it but just to unroll it and let the air in (on a dry day of course) and have a good sniff for anything nasty.

How dry was dry? Even on the hottest day the underside of tent will be wet & there could still have been condensation inside. At the end of season, even if a tent has been packed away dry its still good to unpack it & hang it out indoors to ensure it is completely dry.

Thanks for all your replies. Michell8 I think we will definitely be sure to do that next time. Camping in Scotland this year, so not so confident of dry weather!

I would say it's the garage I won't leave our awning in there. We have to store everything in the house just for the winter then it can go back outside.
