CUrrently we've got a Rover 75 estate, but even with roof rack there isn't enough room with the big tent taking up most of the boot. We're now looking a VW multivan or American day van to give more room luggage wise and leg room for the growing kids.
Trouble is we now took too much stuff. When we first went camping all we'd take would be sleeping bags, tent, a couple of blankets, small stove, kettle & a couple of pans. We'd get everything into our Austin Metro and still have room!
We have a Volvo XC90 but it's no where near big enough. With 3 boys and a dog, we need a huge trailer just to stand any chance of getting all of out things in.
There is a simple equation to work out how much space you need to transport camping gear which is: amount of people x 2 seats. Meaning each person will take the equivalent of a seats capacity (or half a regular boot)amount of gear/clothes etc.
Using this equation I'm doing well to use my 7 seater to camp with the three children without using our trailer . Ok so I just made this equation up but I think it's pretty close realistically.
For our family camping holidays this is how we get there
