Hi All,

Following some advice from this site last month i picked up a Gelert Corona 6 from Tesco, we now have a collection of gear, foliding picnic table/seats, folding chairs, cutlery, plastic crockery, readybeds, hand pump, windbreaker, etc... lets just say this camping things addictive.

Anyway, we are now booked in for a 3 night 'trial' run at Haven Blue dolphin at the second half of next month. i dont know if this is correct thinking but the plan was that this would be a safe and relativly easy start to camping with a 6 & 2 year old, the thinking was that it gives us activities, swimming, bar, restaurants all within a very small distance meaning we dont need to think about too much and the recent reviews all say the wash facilities are clean and hot.

my main concern is i have not idea what i am doing, we did a trial run putting up the tent that went well concidering the limitations of my dads garden, which we used as the tent measures bigger then our whole garden! and im very pleased with the size and ease in which it all went together (from arriving the tent was up and full within an hour including all air beds)

things like what way to you point the tent, campsite etiquette (SP?), where to park, charging phones are all of many concerns i have.

We are all really looking forward to it and after spending a week in a caravan with the full family (8 in all) in cornwall a couple of years ago at a haven site we are looking to enjoy it with just the 4 of us.

any advice you can offer to a newbie camper... as its only about an hours drive away i did suggest to my wife that i could go up in the morning and get set up then go straight from collecting the eldest from school but we need to look into arrival/departure times

anyway any advice or reccomendations would be great as this is a trial for a planned 7-10 day escape later in august if all goes well :)

I have not actually camped with little ones in tow, but I think if it's a trial run it would be kind of fun, not to mention easier on the nerves, to get the tent set up in peace, without the kids 'trying to help' - on this occasion, anyway! Then you haven't got them wanting their tea and getting tangled in guys while you're still trying to peg it out. You can bring them when everything is already there, and they can settle straight in. And if they're VERY good, next time they can help to put it up! Heh heh...

It sounds like a corporate, organised sort of site, so I'm guessing they will tell you which way to pitch, where to park etc. No idea about the phones. Can you email them and ask?

Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!

Hi, welcome to the world of camping, Firstly arrival time. Someone may be on pitch already and usual leaving time is 11.30ish.so you might not be able to go and pitch early morning. Sites usually ask you to arrive after 12.
Setting up alone might not be as easy as you think. Actually the fun of it, I think is all helping to set up.
Although a divorce is usually on the cards until tent is up. (read the thread on here about that and have a laugh)
Tent pitching,- you are allocated a pitch and you can decide how you pitch your tent yourself.. Some sites give you as much space as you want, some have a peg of sorts in the centre of your pitch, with a number on the peg or somewhere. and you stick to your space. Cars can go wherever you can put them. Just have a look around to see how others are set up.
Good plan to have a trial set up, which you.ve done.
Just pick up family, get there and enjoy. Maybe take something easy to cook for first meal after setting up.
I was so nervous the first time. thought everyone would be looking at the newbie, but campers just ar'nt like that. it was so windy our first time and we were struggling with tent. People next to us just helped us then we helped them. Most people are just friendly and help each other ( although there's always one!!)
May I suggest a pump for airbeds that fits in car plug, so much quicker and cheap to buy in Asda/ Tesco etc. Better than hand pump which you have.
We like sites without clubhouses, just clean facilities and plenty of space, but theres loads to choose from, and everyone to their own. Have a great time, and remember, everyone helps on here

My tips are (a) have fun, and (b) if you need help don't be afraid to ask. There will be at least one person within 50m of you who will be more than happy to lend you a hand.. particularly when pitching and 'de-pitching' :)

Have a brilliant time, and have fish and chips (or something) on the first night, don't worry about bothering to cook x

gtanny,

Charging phones - are you on electric? if so just plug in.
If not sometimes in the information room, laundry I see people have left phones charging. Sometimes we charge the phone at reception (behind the desk for security) at 50p a go or some have donation to charity. We charge when we go out in the car - for outings or shopping. Ours will continue to charge if the keys are left in the ignition!! so if sitting beside the car you can leave to charge further. Do ring the site and ask the question.

Parking - usually beside the tent.

Pointing the tent - the way we are told to, the way it fits on the pitch or for the best view (depends on rules and shape of pitch)

Etiquette - just like on here - be friendly and remember everyone is on holiday.

Thanks for the advice,

as we are picking the eldest up from school on the last day of term and going straight from them i was hoping to go early to beat the rush but as we cant book in until 12 so if it took me too long to get set up i would run the risk of being late to pick her up and with it being the last day of term chances are she will be leaving earlyish.

we are not on electric so we plan to rely on the car for charging phones, as its only 3 days we are hoping the car battery will be ok for this period, i will make sure this is ok as i dont want to have a flat battery when im due to set off home, ill check when we get there as im sure some area or another will have a plug we can use.

i do have a small pump but i was relictant to rely on it incase for any reason we couldnt get parked next to the tent (maybe not this trip but a future one) so a hand pump doesnt rely on a power source.

the intial plan for the setup will be to leave the kids watching a dvd in the car while we get the main bit of the tent pegged in and then allow them to run around a bit while i get the beds and such setup but as with most things involving kids this will depend on how much they choose to cooperate.

were looking forward to it and interested on trying camping, we are initially looking into a 7-10 day break at another haven (or similar) site but will depend on how everything goes this time.

the main reason we are looking into these sort of sites is the entertainment it offers for the girls, we can have nice easy days using onsite food with entertainment and swimming at no extra cost yet also be close enough for a few days out offsite.

i dont know if this is just my lack of knowledge of camping but it just seems like its an easier option then just a 'normal' campsite when it comes to kids

i would be very open to suggestions for a longer break (possibly a few shorter stays in different locations but that depends how well the trial setup goes and i dont want the stress of putting away and setting up repeatedly if its too bad) but the main requirement is that the kids enjoy it.

Gtanny, where do you live, it doesn't say. Know what you're saying about entertaining the girls, but as most will agree, children just enjoy making friends on the sites and often make their own fun. Some sites have great play areas,, and the children just meet others, but enjoy your break, Im sure things will be great, and you may find other sites you fancy visiting, where the girls will just make friends and run around.. Last trip we went on, there was a group having football game, another group playing cricket, then others on swings etc. I was playing badminton with a 9yr old and ended up with sprained wrist, but that's another story!!!

One tip from me....Adapt to what's around you or what happens once your there.....I don't mean that in a bad way..Or that you should just fit in with what everyone else is doing....But there will be times when plans made round the kitchen table at home won't work for one reason or another and may need a small adjustment...

If unsure about anything ask at reception when you book in.....And ask those already camped around you if you can't find the toilet block or playpark etc...Most folk are only too happy to help....

Second tip....Enjoy it all from setting off to getting home...Its a family holiday....Not some test of your character......

Jelboy.
