Hi All,
Following some advice from this site last month i picked up a Gelert Corona 6 from Tesco, we now have a collection of gear, foliding picnic table/seats, folding chairs, cutlery, plastic crockery, readybeds, hand pump, windbreaker, etc... lets just say this camping things addictive.
Anyway, we are now booked in for a 3 night 'trial' run at Haven Blue dolphin at the second half of next month. i dont know if this is correct thinking but the plan was that this would be a safe and relativly easy start to camping with a 6 & 2 year old, the thinking was that it gives us activities, swimming, bar, restaurants all within a very small distance meaning we dont need to think about too much and the recent reviews all say the wash facilities are clean and hot.
my main concern is i have not idea what i am doing, we did a trial run putting up the tent that went well concidering the limitations of my dads garden, which we used as the tent measures bigger then our whole garden! and im very pleased with the size and ease in which it all went together (from arriving the tent was up and full within an hour including all air beds)
things like what way to you point the tent, campsite etiquette (SP?), where to park, charging phones are all of many concerns i have.
We are all really looking forward to it and after spending a week in a caravan with the full family (8 in all) in cornwall a couple of years ago at a haven site we are looking to enjoy it with just the 4 of us.
any advice you can offer to a newbie camper... as its only about an hours drive away i did suggest to my wife that i could go up in the morning and get set up then go straight from collecting the eldest from school but we need to look into arrival/departure times
anyway any advice or reccomendations would be great as this is a trial for a planned 7-10 day escape later in august if all goes well :)

I have not actually camped with little ones in tow, but I think if it's a trial run it would be kind of fun, not to mention easier on the nerves, to get the tent set up in peace, without the kids 'trying to help' - on this occasion, anyway! Then you haven't got them wanting their tea and getting tangled in guys while you're still trying to peg it out. You can bring them when everything is already there, and they can settle straight in. And if they're VERY good, next time they can help to put it up! Heh heh...
It sounds like a corporate, organised sort of site, so I'm guessing they will tell you which way to pitch, where to park etc. No idea about the phones. Can you email them and ask?
------------- Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!

Hi, welcome to the world of camping, Firstly arrival time. Someone may be on pitch already and usual leaving time is 11.30ish.so you might not be able to go and pitch early morning. Sites usually ask you to arrive after 12.
Setting up alone might not be as easy as you think. Actually the fun of it, I think is all helping to set up.
Although a divorce is usually on the cards until tent is up. (read the thread on here about that and have a laugh)
Tent pitching,- you are allocated a pitch and you can decide how you pitch your tent yourself.. Some sites give you as much space as you want, some have a peg of sorts in the centre of your pitch, with a number on the peg or somewhere. and you stick to your space. Cars can go wherever you can put them. Just have a look around to see how others are set up.
Good plan to have a trial set up, which you.ve done.
Just pick up family, get there and enjoy. Maybe take something easy to cook for first meal after setting up.
I was so nervous the first time. thought everyone would be looking at the newbie, but campers just ar'nt like that. it was so windy our first time and we were struggling with tent. People next to us just helped us then we helped them. Most people are just friendly and help each other ( although there's always one!!)
May I suggest a pump for airbeds that fits in car plug, so much quicker and cheap to buy in Asda/ Tesco etc. Better than hand pump which you have.
We like sites without clubhouses, just clean facilities and plenty of space, but theres loads to choose from, and everyone to their own. Have a great time, and remember, everyone helps on here

Gtanny, where do you live, it doesn't say. Know what you're saying about entertaining the girls, but as most will agree, children just enjoy making friends on the sites and often make their own fun. Some sites have great play areas,, and the children just meet others, but enjoy your break, Im sure things will be great, and you may find other sites you fancy visiting, where the girls will just make friends and run around.. Last trip we went on, there was a group having football game, another group playing cricket, then others on swings etc. I was playing badminton with a 9yr old and ended up with sprained wrist, but that's another story!!!
