Hi all. I've just bought a Cabanon Calais without a canopy and would like to make one (since they're nigh on impossible to buy!). Does anyone have a source for reasonably-priced or second-hand cotton canvas?

For that matter, does anyone have a bit of spare canvas that they could give/sell to me? I'm a postgraduate student - so no loan and very tight budget!
Thanks.

Can I just say excellent tent, ideal for solo camping and will stand up to very rough weather even with the canopy up.
As to the canopy the one problem they have is rain tends to pool, so a tarp configured to fit maybe a better option.

Thanks. Attwoolls is expensive though. A metre by 160cm for £14 compared to say here which has canvas at 185cm by one metre for £9.

Hi, great idea and good luck with your project. I made a second canopy with sides for our Estoril (see gallery).

I bought the canvas and window fabric, cotton tape to neaten the edges, for the ties, and cotton thread to sew: all from Esvo Esvo cotton canvas for tents. Brilliant service and not expensive for the quality and width of canvas. I bought the eyelet kit from John Lewis (non-rusting) and some PVC tablecloth fabric for reinforcement under the eyelets.

Funny story (well, not that funny but I'm not a comedian):
the person selling the tent I'd won on eBay turned out not to be in Richmond-upon-Thames as I'd assumed, but Richmond, Yorkshire. That was a bit far for me to drive!

I've seen a nice Chambord, which comes with the sun canopy. I'm worried that it might be a bit big for solo camping, but then if I'm going by car I don't suppose that'll be a problem.

Ah...

As you may know already, frame tents are fairly easy to put up solo - I can pretty much pitch the 6-berth Estoril on my own. I feel the Chambord wouldn't be too much hassle to pitch as the frames are less uncontrollable than bendy fibreglass tentacles. Campers are friendly folk by and large, so you would probably be offered some help if needed - or sought it. Having a bit of space to move around and spread out your stuff sounds like a luxury not a problem . Hope you find something to suit.

Well, I picked up the Chambord this evening from a lovely bloke called Rob in Hemel Hempstead. He even threw in a big bag of assorted pegs and a sack truck.

It came with sun canopy and a breathable groundsheet. I can't wait to erect it in the garden tomorrow! I'll find out how easy/hard it is then.

Congrats on your new to you Cabanon. I am sure you'll love it.   Why not post some pics ? Hint we like photos of tents. :D

Imo you did the right thing, i'd never buy a Cabanon frame tent without a sun canopy its just easier to wait for the right tent.   Here's a tip I find makes it quicker and easier to erect the canopy > tie it onto the frame before you raise the frame from it's knees, and then just throw it up on the roof out of the way till you are ready to do the poles. It saves on all that stretching etc.
Enjoy your new tent :)

Thanks for all the tips. I've put it up in the garden and it's had a good soaking in the rain

It does look rather splendid. Might need some bunting...

Bridgeywidge. I am really interested in the sided canopy as I have planned for ages to make sides fir ours. Are there any threads discussing how you made it?   I'd love to hear of your experience with that.   The Esvo website has been bookmarked for ages for shen i am ready to order the canvas.
