Thanks everyone, this has been really invaluable, I think I have taken a little something from everyone to be honest!!
Well we are pretty much all packed and ready to go now, we've gone back and forth debating the weather and such and have stuck with out original idea of Whittingham, it seems a low cost quiet place to give ourselves a great low pressure first try, I'm sure me and the husband are more excited now than the kids. It's a cheesy thing but to know we can afford to go away now with our kids, it feels great, we have had to put it out of our minds for too long.....(manning up now, sniff sniff....)
Anyway I am set "free" from work after lunch tomorrow and will enjoy fitting the car jigsaw then we're off, shall get some pictures for people to laugh at on our return!!
Well we survived!! Had the worst first night and then the best weekend afterwards, thanks to everyone for your help, will be posting in the trip reports forum :)

Hi and welcome. ON our first camping trip we were told not to spray deodrant inside the tent.
Have fun.
That's one I've never heard off. Did they say why?

I have to say after putting it up in the garden to air out we are all ridiculously excited
How did putting the tent up in the garden go? I.e. was it you and the OH who put it up together?
You can always spot the "Newbies" putting their tents up on a campsite for the 1st or 2nd time by the way they argue
It's true that once the arguing starts between couples pitching their tent other campers will watch and grin to themselves for a short while before coming to the aid of the quarrelsome "Newbies"
To avoid these arguments, (and to take away the enjoyment of onlookers ) make sure you BOTHknow how to pitch your tent, this is why I ask if it was you and your OH that pitched it in your garden.
You can always search Youtube for videos on how to pitch your new tent.
On arriving at the campsite with a car full of kids (& the OH), after however long the journey or how stressful it was take 10 mins to chill and keep calm, pitch your tent as a team lol
Good luck, let us know how the trip went
------------- Rain is only a pain it ya tent leaks. After 40 years still looking for the perfect tent

Thankfully we DID have trial runs in our garden, so didn't look complete idiots!! T'was also the reason why I chose a really quiet site for first time mess-ups!
