should I return it as it is still under guarantee ?
I used our fabulous Icarus 500 tent to test it for the first time and one (of the three) poles shredded! I managed to fix it/hold it secure with gaffer tape & it held just fine for the one night - I am in a fix now as I got it at a really good price from Decathlon for £169 - they cannot replace just the pole and I cannot find a similar tent at a similar price (we are on a really tight budget) - we have at least three camping weekends booked in July/August - can anyone advise whether I could just keep fixing my shredded pole with gaffer tape - will it continue to hold or will I wake up one night with it around our ears lol ?

Many thanks

I'd actually email vango direct and request replacement pole.

You are the customer and you deserve complete satisfaction in your purchase!
Explain you feel it pointless returning whole tent when the fault is located to a pole etc
Email vango and cc your supplier to keep them in the loop

Hope this helps

For a quick fick just go into any good camping store and buy a pole section or try www.tentspares.co.uk and then just re thread the one broken pole section.

If you get no joy just search for Icarus 500 pole repair kits. You will find loads. You can then replace the broken section and have some spare for the next time too

Most tent manufacturers do not cover poles, it is bad luck sadly, did you have the straps near the pin where you insert the poles at the loosest setting? Always worth checking that the poles are not catching on the fabric pole sleeve etc...it might be sucking eggs.

If you are unsure or worried about re threading the pole try taking the section down to your local independent camping shop, they should be able to supply and fit a new one at a cost of course.

On this occasion, unless Vango or Gooutdoors offer you one for free, I'd bite the bullet and buy a set of replacement poles. It's always a good idea to carry a spare pole with fibreglass poles anyway. Even a perfectly set up and guyed out tent can break in severe weather conditions or someone falling on the tent.

Many poles are broken because people seem to think they are unbreakable. I watched someone struggling to put up a tent recently and they had threaded the pole and then grabbed one end and tried to lift the entire tent upright. The pole was flexing and buckling in all directions. I couldn't watch any more and had to run over and grab the other end to assist. It wasn't an easy erect tent by any means with poles going in all directions and the poor chap was struggling on his own

A single pole section from Go Outdoors is about £3, fairly simple to change a section once you have the knack of it.

Also, tip for this tent, pitch it front to back, front polein first, then middle, then back. Least tension that way.

It is a great tent though, my favourite of all my tents but I too have broken a couple of poles on this.

We camped with my parents a few years ago in Norfolk and excactly the same thing happened. We had pitched the tent, went out for the day and came back to a bizarre shaped tent. Luckily we had bought camping euipment from Norwich Camping and called them. They had a pole that we bought and replaced but tbh it was a little off-putting having it go wrong first time...especially as my parents hadn't camped for years (since I was a child) and this was their "maiden vogage" with their new tent.

My sister broke a pole the first time she put her Icarus up but by her own admission she put it under too much tension. I also had one snapped pole, which I replaced with a pole section. We have both been using our tents (hers 2009 and mine 2010) without any breakages since.

This recent UKCS thread might help - it's about fixing split poles

I too can vouch for Tent Spares as a supplier.

We had similar experience with the same tent a few years back. We got ours from decathlon. Tension straps also broke. Full refund received.
