We've recently acquired a trailer and are off to go camping in Germany soon. We have RAC cover with european breakdown cover for our car, but it doesn't extend to the trailer. RAC wont extend it, unless we take out cover through CCC membership.

Would it be worth it taking out membership?

Never bothered myself, but am I missing something, breakdown cover for trailer? We've got a spare wheel attached, that's all that is necessary surely?

We have just taken out C and CC club membership for the purpose of getting trailer cover with the RAC. We look at it from the point of view that if our tow car broke down and had to be transported to a garage, then with the trailer cover that would be transported as well. Otherwise the RAC would only recover the car itself.
There is no way we could fit all the stuff we take in the trailer into the car, and I would not like to have to abandon the trailer anywhere if we did need to get towed away by the RAC.
For £37 a year, it gives us peace of mind when travelling with the trailer and the benefit of membership for sites etc if we want them.

When I had a caravan it was covered along with the car all the time it was attached to the car. I can't remember who I was insured with at the time but I thought that was the case with most insurance companies. Maybe you should change from the RAC and insure with a new company. Joining the C&CC just to get trailer insurance sounds an expensive way of going about it.

hmm, I'm insured with Hastings and have their premium cover which includes breakdown cover, I'm 99% sure it covers the trailer whilst attached to the car in the UK but will check if it is also cover in Europe.

Just checked our insurance for the Landrover, trailer is covered for loss and damage if no other policy covers it.

Also we are with the AA and again the trailer is included if we are towing at the time.

Not sure about European cover though.

Jane.

I have RAC roadside, recovery & at home cover and after reading this post I gave them a call about towing trailers & their cover. I was told just as long as it is less than 3.5 tonnes,7.0 metres long including tow bar, 2.3 metres wide then you're covered.

We have our RAC cover using Tesco clubcard points and when I asked about trailer cover, they told me I needed the C and CC membership to include my trailer. I wonder if the RAC policies bought with Tesco points are more of a 'budget' policy so don't include any extra perks ?
Might give them a ring and ask the question when I get a minute.

Well I have just phoned the RAC to clarify about this trailer cover query.
If you have RAC cover with the C and CC membership code, both your car and trailer are fully covered for any sort of breakdown.
If you have just the RAC membership without C and CC membership code, if your tow vehicle breaks down they will recover your trailer as long as it is within a certain size as 'quidsin' says above. However, if the problem / fault causing the breakdown is actually on your trailer, as opposed to your tow vehicle, then you are not covered.
