I don't fancy driving through the night. Being the sole driver I know I wouldn't get any sleep when we got there with the two kids. Do you sleep when you get there? Or at least the driver?
It might be a bit pricey, but have you considered breaking your journey and booking into a B&B or Travel Lodge or similar? You could then leave late afternoon, miss the worst of the traffic, stop halfway (or even further) for the night, and leave again early the next morning. It might be less stressful and exhausting if you're doing all the driving.
Last time I booked a Premier Inn I had a huge family room and it was only about £50. Mind you, that was in Hull!
Have a look the Lleyn peninsular.
2 hours driving, 2 1/2 tops from L'Pool. Fabulous beaches, wonderful scenery and some great sites.
Who needs the stress of traffic hold ups on holiday.
Thanks campingneedsale I didn't realise they did. I don't know if I'm going to chicken out and go to the lakes instead! Would love to see Devon and Cornwall but maybe not on our first camping trip! Still if two minds.

For my next trip at the Lakes, I shall be leaving Wiltshire after 20:30h, with the aim to arrive at a Days Inn north of Manchester for the night.
The fee for the dog is only 5.00 GBP a night.
I shall have a leisurely shorter drive the next morning, to arrive at the camp site shortly after 12:00h for setting up.

The Lakes is appealing as its only 2 hrs from us, ive been looking at Fisherground in eskdale, thats 2 hrs 40 mins. is it a long drive from Wiltshire? You are almost there when you reach Manchester..........suppose depends how long you've been driving.

At least 5.5h from where I live to Eskdale C&CC, and I am towing a trailer.
Hence I would rather break it up with an overnight stay. Otherwise I have to get up quite early in order to make it up there in good time to allow 4-5h+ for setting up.

I live in Cornwall and have just come home from a fabulous 2 weeks in the lakes. I stayed at Churchstile, Nether Wasdale - not far from Eskdale - it was a fantasitc site - my favourite to date and I have been camping on and off for over 20 years now. From Newquay to the site, with one stop en route, leaving at 6am took 8 hours door to door - due to the M5 and M6 currently a building site with loads of it on a 50mph speed limit.
The site has a lovely nature trail/dog walk on site - my hound loved it. Also the beach at Drigg is only about 20 miniute drive from the site and it is dog friendly with free parking. Beach not as nice as Cornwall beaches of course! but a nice run around for the dog. There is also a lovely walk at Wast Water a 10 minute drive from the site. The path follows the little beach around the end of the lake - woods on one side, water on the other, my dog was in heaven. Also great for the kids, you could take a picnic there and they could swim - if they are brave - brrgggghhhh!
Good luck with your final choice.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
we go to Cornwall 2 or 3 times a year and I lived there for a couple of years don't try and drive in Devon or Cornwall on a Saturday between about 9 am and 3 pm if we are arriving on a Saturday we try to arrive by 8 or 9 no later if you cannot you would be better getting their later about 3 or 4. If you can travel a different day that is good but a lot of sites only do sat to sat bookings in July and August.
I have to say Church Stile is a lovely campsite as is the C&CC one in Eskdale. I'm not fond of Fisherground - though it is nice to be able to have a fire - keeps the midges away !!
Leave mega early. Just been down to Cornwall over the weekend and couldn't believe how much of the motorway network was roadworks, from north of Birmingham to Gloucester. Unless you leave early, you WILL go mad.
