Worst experience we had was actually in france, a group of french teenagers insisted in using the showers anytime between 2 and 4am, and had no concept of keeping noise down with singing, doors banging, talking loudly and shouting to each other. Too the site 4 nights of everyone complaining before they finally locked the shower block at 11pm. 5th night lots of shouting and swearing at 3am, then all ok. It really is luck of the draw, can be idiots anywhere.
Meant to add was still a great holiday, and not really had any other problems on numerous trips both in the UK and france.

Jane.
Sorry to hijack the thread but I would very much recommend Treen Farm in Cornwall, I never thought small, quiet sites existed down there.
Back on topic.
My personal opinion, the more "gadgets" a campsite has, the higher the chance of etiquette not being followed as these sites attract a higher number of fair weather, bank holiday campers.
Goto a simple site consisting of a field and portaloo and etiquette is second to none in my opinion.
I had the same reservations being the school holidays and over crowed fields especially on "all singing all dancing" sites.............we booked crofton country park holidays 3 days before we came (still here now) we got the overflow field!!! What a godsend! IT IS FANTASTIC! We very much like our privacy but have found our haven.............as have many of the other families we've spoke to. My advice is don't debate too much and drive yourself crazy as I did.. Just do it! We're booking in before we leave for next year! Go with you're insinct. Enjoy!
------------- Nothing better than looking up at the stars and realising just how small we are!
The worst we have encountered was on a seasonal pitch. Our neighbours lived in the caravan all season (March til October) with 2 young teenage children who were home educated? that is when mum could be bothered as she said they learned more about life than any school could teach them. Bed time was anytime after midnight with music playing until bed time and kids riding round on bikes till very late, but the worst thing was the 2 PARROTS which squawked constantly when not being taken for walks on the owners shoulders. It was so bad we moved but then found out they had been issued with eviction notices so they weren't there for the next season either. We found a much better site so not complaining but life was a misery while there. We had complained to management but nothing was done at the time. I wasn't the only one to complain either mainly about the wife driving like a maniac when the speed limit was 5mph.
We have obviously been lucky in France, possibly because we have never been there during the summer holidays, when I can imagine sites can become frenetic.
Thanks for the positive messages re Trewince and Argies the overflow field at Crofton Country Park sounds our sort of place and from Gimpymo, I have taken a note of Treen Farm if we are ever down that way.
I love camping anyway, setting up our little tent just about anywhere always fill me with pleasure. I reckon its the nest builder in me.
You can find the perfect site and it will be ruined by inconsiderate people...
Last week I was camped on a site in Norfolk in Wells. Glorious weather, the site was quite quiet. Except for the numpties in the tent next to us (tiny one pitched UNDER a gazebo) who insisted on having their car running pretty much constantly. Sometimes with said car booming eighties rock. They had few social skills too - he would sit and stare at us, occasionally asking a question abruptly. Weird.
We also once went to a highly recommended site and had to listen to blaring disco music all night. From a group at the other end of the campsite. Nothing was done.
We've been lucky usually. But I do research the campsites to the point of being neurotic and was really worried about some of them. Unfounded on this year's choices. Apart from the above idiots.
------------- June: Waxham Sands, Horsey
School camp out, Whitwell
July: Pinewoods, Wells Next The Sea
August: Waxham Sands, Horsey
My little trick is to look in the reviews for the words "This is a gem of a site..." That usually means nice, simple facilities, carefully tended by the owners, very secluded and nobody knows about it yet. Perfect!
You can still get inconsiderate campers, but I've found that in over forty years' camping I've only been bothered by bad behaviour two or three times.
