Hi, leave your plans open for now. The weather is often good towards the end of September. Keep an eye on the forecasts and book somewhere last minute. You shouldnt have a problem with availability anywhere that late in the season.

One can rely on the weather to be changeable and unpredictable.

I went camping in mid July and erroneously did not pack any fleece or waterproofs except for a thin Regatta Packaway jacket, and wished I had, when it rained and temperature dropped quite a bit during the day as well as in the evening.

I got by with the Packaway jacket during the day and the dressing gown in the evening, and needed to use the fan heater at night occasionally.

Therefore, I would advise to go prepared for the bad and cold weather, with a good sleep system; layers of clothing including waterproofs; suitable footwear; and board games etc...

No need to sound so dubious about your 1st camping trip in September....

You have a few weeks to plan for any eventuality weather wise...You know the area your camping in....So can keep an eye on the forecasts...And research "Indoor activities" as a backup if the wet stuff arrives...

Granted September is not most peoples month of choice for their 1st camping trip....But with a bit of planning it's doable...

If on electric hook up invest in a fan heater for the tent for when the temps drop in the evening/morning and you should be fine...

Plenty of folk on here camp year round...And manage fine...You and the family will be fine......

Jelboy.

September is pretty good for camping in my view, no crowds, lower prices, and the weather is still usually nice.

What's not to like? As others say, a fan heater for the evenings (we have in the past been known to have to use that in July and August, the weather is never guaranteed even then!)

You may as well go for it before your kids get to school age and you have to face the tyranny of 'no term time holidays or else' (ridiculous and wrong in my view, my lot did it and flourished, in fact they were educationally enriched by it, but that is another story!)

When our last one finishes A levels and hence school in a couple of years, we will be taking full advantage of the out of season benefits of nice clear campsites and lower prices as well as plenty of availability, even in the most congested summer spots!

Enjoy!

Jane.

September can be very warm during the day and a pleasant time of year to go camping when the leaves on the trees start turning golden, but may be quite chilly and damp when the sun sets, which will be a lot earlier than at present.

I have been camping in sub zero temperatures in my time but wouldn't do it deliberately now and frosts have come fairly early over the last couple of years. My advice therefore is to wait until about 3-4 days before you want to go before booking. By then you should know what the weather will be like. Check rainfall, temperatures, but especially wind day and night. You don't want to be struggling with kids in gale force winds. Check especially on arrival day and going home day so that you are not erecting the tent or taking it down in torrential rain or high winds.

It is the time of year when you never know what clothes to take so be prepared. You may need light clothing during the day but it will definitely be cold at night so lots of winter clothes and warm bedding are a must. I would certainly invest in EHU and a fan heater.

One piece of advice I would give is to take onesies, not everyone's cup of tea I know, but for sleeping in they are superb on a chilly night, also double up as great things to wear to the showers in the morning, save taking all your clothes with you.

Hope this helps,

Scooby.

We camp from the beginning of April to the end of October.

We don't have/want EHU either.

You will be fine if you take the right clothes. We take thermals, a hat, fleece tops (I take some old fleece jodphurs too - style is not a word I would use). We sleep in our thermals if necessary and even take our sheepskin slipper boot things for inside the tent!

Porridge, stews, hot chocolate etc., etc., and of course a bit of alcohol will warm you up.

I used to dress my daughter in one of those fleece onesie things when she was little as she never kept her shoulders/upper body in her bag. I used to wake up and check that she was warm enough and she always was.

Take a couple of fleece type blankets if you can fit them in just in case.

I am the biggest 'cold' wimp and love camping late/early when everything is quiet.

Wellies and onesies for the kids...day and night...our lot love wearing them--but insist the wellies come off for bed!As mentioned previously..keep them warm at bedtime and they will keep themselves warm for the rest of the day running about. The grass will probably be wet on mornings-hence the wellies..nobody likes cold ,wet feet.
