Discretion has proved to be the better part of valour, and Cotswold Water Park (Go-by-Cycle site) will not be seeing me and my Aztec next Tuesday. Two friends and I were planning a two-tent mini-Aztec Moot, but it's just looking too windy for comfort. One of us hasn't been camping for 40 years, so we have to treat her (and the tents, of course) gently! We don't want to miss out on our annual get-together, so we've booked a Travelodge instead.

Has anyone else had their camping plans for the next week interfered with by the remains of Bertha?

Nope, we are still going to be heading up to Scotland on Tuesday, it's only a bit of wind and rain, not a full on hurricane!

EDIT from what I can see of the forecast for that area, the wind is not even as high as it is today here in Bedford, and its only a bit breezy here now!

Since the infamous 1987 storm and the famous Michael Fish quote 'there is no storm' or words to that effect, there has been far too much scaremongering over the slightest chance of bad weather, the forecasters are so keen to cover their backs in case they are sued!

Unless truly gale force winds or extreme weather were forecast, and there are none where we are heading, we would not cancel a trip.

If we only went away when the weather was ideal, we would never go anywhere.

Hope you still have a good time with your friends,

Jane.

I think the rain would have been more of an issue than the wind. At least you are all still getting away together.

Not camping next week just working17

If you feel more relaxed that everyone will be happy by going the Travelodge route then why not. You can just all look forward to enjoying yourselves together rather than fretting there may be problems. Have fun.

It is always going to be difficult deciding whether a planned trip is going to end up a catastrophe due to the weather. For that reason I rarely book more than a couple of days in advance although for many people that isn't an option. The weather reports aren't particularly helpful at the moment either...so much for modern technology!

I have cancelled trips in the past after weather forecasts predicted gale force winds and then on the day nothing happened.

Rain is not the problem except on arrival and departure days but high winds can be a killer...literally. Not only can the wind demolish a tent or even upturn a caravan but it can fell trees and large branches. Tents and caravans have been crushed in the past with fatal results.

It is all very well putting on a brave face and going camping despite the weather warnings and hopefully everyone gets away with it, but just ask yourself if it is worth it and make a sensible decision based on the reports at the time.

If nothing happens you have lost a holiday...if something happens you could well lose a life.

Some sensible words, there. Thanks for your comments. I've never stayed in a Travelodge, so will be interested to see how they differ from Premier Inn, which is where I usually stay if I'm taking Dad anywhere. He's staying home and watering the tomatoes for me this time; this one's for the girls! We will have fun.

Does that mean there is a vacancy at the Go-By-Cycle site next Tuesday?

I think there'll probably be several... still they've had some really good weather so far; it all had to come home to roost at some point! This is England, after all... I'm hoping the rain will plump up the apples on my tree - if the wind doesn't knock them off, that is.

We are booked to travel to Wales today but will probably go tomorrow instead as we don't fancy trying to put up a large tent in high winds.

My daughter and family have been camping on Anglesey and are due to come home today - tent will be wringing wet, I daresay! It's wet and windy on Wirral this morning, certainly.

Wind's just starting to pick up here in East Anglia, certainly stronger than we were forecast. Also, they're now reporting thunderstorms which weren't forecast so glad I'm not camping and think anyone who has cancelled has probably made a good choice. My fence looks like it's on the move so a tent certainly would be!

We've had some shocking wind here - at least as bad at times as anything during the winter.

Truly torrential rain, too, but it's all a bit stop-and-start.

If we had planned to go away, I think we'd have put it off till tomorrow.

I definitely would not subject my tent to this kind of weather, wouldn't be much gun as all I would do is worry, I would cancel too x

Thunderstorms down here overnight and heavy gusts of wind but not half as bad as expected. It has now stopped raining and is just blustery. I wouldn't have liked to be out camping in it last night and even today would be a bit dodgy.

We have had some heavy rain on and off here in Bedfordshire with a few rumbles of thunder for about an hour or two, and a bit of a breeze, but nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

The rain has stopped now and the sun is coming through the clouds.

Think that's our lot, though I could be wrong, of course!

Jane.
