Leave the UK to the caravanists, as it is not the place for family Tent camping IMHO.
Camping abroad is something we have looked at. But if you have got a 7 hour drive just to get to the South coast, a limited budget and only a week off work, it kind of makes the idea of camping abroad less attractive.
I can see the appeal of it, it just doesnt work for everyone. Some of us have no choice but to brave the weather here!
We only started camping two years ago and 5 trips later all but one of the forecasts was pretty rubbish , we wondered if we should bother too as we didn't want the weather to out us off.
In the end we've been lucky and had lovely weather on the south coast.
We are going Thursday this week and weather looks and has been quite chilly, I've invested in a heater as last year I got quite cold. Not sure I would go if the weather was forecast to rain excessively though , what's the point ?
We've just returned from a week camping on the Norfolk Coast and I'll be totally honest and say that we are now no longer going to be camping for long periods in the uk. We had torrential rain and really high winds last night and it was miserable. Every other night it was so cold we were all wearing five layers... Two of the nights we could see our breath. It really was bitterly cold. That's not fun for me. I like to camp without electricity so it seems that we'll be back to France next year after giving the UK a go for the last three years. I like to sit outside the tent with a glass of wine and a book in the evening and when I can't do that cos I'm too cold then I feel like I'm not on holiday.

We set up during showers on out trip to Fishguard this year.
To be honest it was probably the funniest set up to date.We got the tent up in light drizzle then just as we finished, the heavens opened, Daughter and Dog were in car me Hubby and Son in the tent, Daughter tried to phone me using her mobile, but mine was in the car in her words (never felt so disappointed as when you phone rang next to me!)
We just sat out the hard rain then finished getting the rest of our gear from the car.
Hiya, we went for it in the end, it was raining when we arrived so took the kids to a play area whilst we waited for rain to ease, within an hr it had stopped so we drove back and set up... Quickly lol. Luckily it did not rain again till late that eve and continued to do so most of the day oh and then the wind came lol.. We decided to cut our break short by a day as it was lovely and sunny on Thursday but forecast heavy rain again Friday... I have loved the whole experience and so have the kids so good all round😃... My brother camps to but they head over to france due to the weather here... Looking forward to our next trip..
Setting up in the rain I don't find a problem. We just wear thin easy to dry out clothes which will dry easily afterwoods.
So long as were warm and dry with plenty to do then rain during a trip hasn't bothered us yet either but then we've only experienced on and off rain so far - constant rain over several days would be enough to drive us home though.
It's taking a wet tent home that's a real pain that we try to avoid. We've taken to monitoring the weather in the last couple of days of a trip and chosing a time to depart when the tent is dry.. even if this means leaving a night early.
