Hi all. I just purchased this tent - http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTkxWDc4Nw==/z/An8AAOSw7NNT-zGw/$_80.JPG .. it's lovely but 20 or so years old. I have read some threads about not waterproofing canvas but it seems the jury's out.
Opinions please?
Also have anyone waterporoofed a tent like this with Fabsil. Was it ok?
Many thanks.Image link

I would put it up in the garden (if you can) and give it a good soaking with a hose pipe. If it doesn't leak, leave well alone. If it does leak, let it dry thoroughly and then soak it again as, if it hasn't been used for some time, the threads may have shrunk and the first soaking will cause them to swell again.

My dad bought one of those from Black's in 1963 so may be even older than you think! Brilliant tent though and lasted for many years.

I agree with Ronni54.
I have a Cabanon Calais frame tent and in the dry I can see pin holes of light through the canvas. When it rains the treads swell and the canvas is water proof.

That's a cracking looking tent. :)

Yes, put it up in the garden and reweather it as Ronni says. Chances are it will leak at the first wetting if it's been in store for a while and the canvas is dry. It's the second wetting that will show whether it needs proofing or not.

You could also check with the seller if it's ever been proofed, generally if it has the rule of thumb is to then reproof it every five years. Proofing it with Fabsil or similar is a bit time consuming but it is effective, I just prefer not to proof my canvas tents to save time and cash when it isn't necessary.

It would be nice to see some more detailed pictures when it arrives btw?

Thanks all. I do have it .. but need to put it up in the garden. Hope to this evening and will leave it out .. get it wet a few times and see what happens. Am hoping it will squeeze into the garden! I need to replace the rubber rings for the tent pegs with something and have lovely clashing fluorescent guy ropes to add. Will find less clashing white ones at a later date. Might even take it out for a spin camping this weekend!
Will take photos when I can.

If you need to replace the pegging loops you can get replacements in any camping shop, just thread them through the cotton tape loops that are hopefully round the base of your tent and loop them back through themselves to secure iyswim. Alternatively use short lengths of shock cord tied in a good secure reef knot.

we have some of these which would be ideal but they are a bit long. So rubber pegging loops looped back on themselves sounds ideal Thank you!

am finding it hard to find rubber pegging loops unless they are off the internet and we want to take the tent out this weekend. SO I think we will get some shock cord for now and try that! Thankyou.

http://instagram.com/p/sePCeNqgU8/?modal=true here you go. Our tent

I soaked it and although it didn't drip it did feel damp on the inside, however the weather this weekend is set to be ok. So I'm going to soak it again and then again tomorrow and hope for the best. If needs be I'll waterproof it this month sometime .. but I didn't want to be rushing around trying to proof it tomorrow and find fabsil today!
