I abandoned all ideas of camping for my two weeks' summer' holiday in August because of constant gusting high winds. Instead I rented a lodge in a fairly remote area.

I was fascinated by the way the wind direction was constantly changing. At times I couldn't see out of the large picture window because the rain was being driven onto it .....then a few hours later the kitchen window at the side was getting it.

Perhaps pitching 'bum to the wind ' is possible if there's some other shelter about ??

For the first since kiddies arrived we went without hookup.

This was only because we wanted to go to New Quay to see my parents but no sites around there offered hookups to tents. So we chanced as an experiment to see how it would go. Won't be going without hookup again. Anyway we were just in the middle of a field. Only place left to go as all sheltered areas were taken.

When we have had hook up, they are always round the more sheltered edges aren't they, near the sockets.
Will def be on hook up next time with bum to wind! (If it's forecast strong winds, we won't be going!)
That's the only downside to a lot of sites. We had to pay the balance 2 weeks before so had we cancelled we would have lost out on £70.

If we go to New Quay again we'll be staying in the caravan!

Just to say I feel your pain. We were away in very strong winds a couple of weeks ago (not forecast!), worst we'd ever camped in and it is very scary. We battened down the hatches and stayed put with only minimal damage - one ring pinged off where we'd attached an extra guy rope.

I would be very surprised if the truth is told to Argos that they will replace the tent although perhaps they won't ask too many questions. £200 is a lot of money even if it's not looked upon as expensive in tent terms. I think camping lesson number one has been learned...don't go camping in a storm.

When I bought my first tunnel tent, it was a Pro-Action from Argos. When it got damaged by strong gusts on its second outing, they refunded the purchase price without a quibble, and the money was back in the bank before they came and collected the tent!

Hubby just rung from Argos, they have refunded it as they don't sell the tent anymore.

Bit disappointed as we now have a carpet and footprint but no tent!

Might head to go outdoors on Sat. Any suggestions for around the £200 mark? 4 berth at least :-)

Footprints are nigh on ten-a-penny. If it doesn't suit your next tent, it'll come in handy some day. If it's a bit too big, you can fold it back and tape it with Gorilla tape. I did this when we changed from an Icarus to a Frinton, and the tape hasn't budged! Works perfectly.

As for carpets, chances are it will do for your next tent bedroom. A tad small? Doesn't have to reach the edge. Too big? Just fold it under.

Can't help with your next tent... but enjoy the shopping!

The vango Icarus seems to be in the sale for £189 at Go at the moment. It seems to be a popular tent. Or they have the hi-gear enigma for £180.

Sports direct have the Coleman Galileo 5 for £210, but I have no idea if that's a good price or not.

Or there is this one
Sunncamp Triumph 400

Which is steel framed. Ok, you might need to replace the rings, but that's an easy job, and for £190, I think it's a bargain!

You're in luck. It's a great time to get a bargain tent!

Over the next couple of months camping shops will have 2014 new and ex-display tents (only buy from indoor displays, UV damage is likely to be too much from an outdoor ex-display model) they'll need to get rid of.

Last year I bought two tents. I bought an ex-display Outwell Denison 5, carpet and groundsheet for £175 in November (on eBay, but from a bricks and mortar shop). Then, a month later I was tempted by a new Vango polycotton, steel framed tent for just over £250.

I waited till June to sell the Outwell tent and footprint (kept the carpet) unused for £190.

There are bargains to be had. Bide your time then act swiftly.

I am going to buy my next tent from Argos, use it for a few trips then break a pole and tell them the weather did it...easy peasy...new tent every few trips

You should return them tomorrow too, yes you could adapt them to another tent but it would be nicer to buy a whole new package that fits together. Go Outdoors usually has at least one good package deal going and it's a great time of year to be buying a tent, don't be in too much of a hurry to spend the refund cash unless you're wanting to go on another trip soon.

We`re off again on 12th Sept! Booked a weekend as having a bathroom delivered 11th but not being started till 15th.

Don't fancy Sat with a living room full of bathroom suite and keeping kiddies off it constantly!

Just a Fri to Sun break so yes we need one quite quickly! Will def be looking at one without an attached canopy this time!

We went to Gower and the winds there were very high. We went a day late to miss the worst of the tail-end hurricane winds but it was still very gusty. We have a Vango Icarus 800 and it didn't budge an inch nor did we have any damage, despite a couple of sleepless nights because of the noise of the wind. Also, we kept the enclosed canopy up through it all. We guyed out everything in site using delta pegs.

As for the next tent, if you can get an Icarus on offer, we have both the 500 and 800 and they have both stood up to some rough weather so thoroughly recommend. BTW, they are not the airbeam versions which I have never tried so I don't know how well they would perform.
