Sounds like hubby was up for camping and his wife tagged along reluctantly or they had a big row and she told him to get on with it.
Or its the same old story, some folk just don't like camping/outdoor pursuits but willingly or unwillingly in this case, will give it a try but usually manage more than one night!
The positive side is that someone will probably benefit from a good deal with "only used once" camping gear on Ebay!

Well said OP, although I would not go family camping anywhere in the UK no matter what time of the year it is, not even if you paid me my body weight in Gold!
It's the LAKE DISTRICT, we have lots of lakes here because (and here's the kicker) IT RAINS A LOT.
p.s All the locals have gills and webbed feet
Not in the West we don't !! Thats just the southern bit of Cumbria nearer to Lancashire.
Its actually been a fab summer - September was amazing.
Has been pretty much raining constantly for the past week or so but I was in Manchester and London this past week and it was pretty soggy there too.
Glug glug splash splash.
------------- Dance before the storm and don't look back to where you've been.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the gravity of the situation.

I like the sound of summer rain on the tent too, especially now I have a SIG. I can't say I appreciated it much in the old days when the wind whipped under the flysheet and the rain ran inside pooling on the loose groundsheet in every depression especially around the feet of tables and chairs.
I have crouched under a few fishing brolleys in my time too, which is fine if the rain is coming straight down but not much fun if it is sheeting and you have to sit under there hunched up like a foetus.
i lived in Carlisle, Cumbria for 2 years (less than 30 mins to lakes) and i can hardley remember it not raining.
I was so pleased to move away.
Personaly, the lakes are lovely but i would never camp there as i'm a fair weather camper and chase the sun. Not much fun walking cycling in the rain and even less fun with an unhappy wife and three kids.
Talking about the Lake District, we went with the caravan for about 10 years on the trot in the late 70's early 80's during July and sometimes August. Mostly we went to Fallbarrow Park at Bowness on Windermere, when they had the grassy glade area for caravans and the statics were in a seperate area nearer the lake.
We always seemed to get great weather, the main reason we kept going back.
We can hardly remember much rain as our holiday snaps also show. The kids loved the lake and kayaking etc.
We went back to the same site about 20 yrs later, just the wife and I and it poured almost everyday. The site had went downhill and mostly statics. Such is life!
