So after throwing in the towel with caravanning due to the ever increasing costs of servicing, depreciation, insurance, etc, we have decided to go back to holidays under canvas.
Over the past few months I have been building up a collection of equipment which includes the tent and a trailer.
I've started looking round for some insurance as I am not convinced the "away from home" house policy will cover the trailer or the value of the equipment.
But I am struggling to find specialist cover for camping trailers and equipment.
Plenty of brokers offering trailer only, trailer tent or just tent insurance, but what about a combination of trailer with separate camping gear?
I've sent off a couple off emails to brokers to see what they suggest, but has anyone else figured this one out?
The go to broker for this sort of thing is often Adrian Flux, have you tried them? It is possible the cover for gear may be only 'goods in transit' ie cover is for theft/accident damage while towing so read small print very carefully. It may also require a locked hardtop trailer etc. You may well have to insure trailer & gear separately but whats the problem with that?
Hi,
We have insurance for the trailer only through Stoneways. Our first year of camping we took out separate tent insurance through C & CC as it was a brand new tent worth over £1000.
At the time, we couldn't find any cover for the rest of the equipment worth having, as most of the time it is obviously unattended and therefore not covered.
We don't bother with the tent insurance anymore, just insure the trailer as it is a good one and would cost a lot to replace.
When I upgraded all our kit back in 2008 which included Trailer £800 and Tent £700, I then sat down and worked out the cost of absolutely everything, the total did come as a shock.
Anyway for that first year we used Shield Insurance who came up with two policies one for the Trailer and another for the Tent and Kit.
I later found out that the Tent was covered as part of my RAC European cover which comes with the firms car I drive.
I also discovered that in the event of total loss, Shield would only cough up current value.
And let's face it in the eyes of an insurance company, the value of a used Tent/Kit and Trailer is going to be about one years premium.
