Silly question I'm sure.

I'm looking at a campsite for June but they only accept Beathable Grounsheets.  My tent has a sewn in groundsheet so safe to assume its not breathable?

This is just groundsheets in caravan awnings, it dosen't apply to tents. If it did it would mean the site dosen't accept tents, which a few might not so worth checking.

Just to make sure you don't have a wasted journey, just ring the site and double check. If they know what they are doing, and what they are talking about, they will immediately tell you to ignore that bit, as it only applies to awnings on caravans etc. (That's happened to me about 3 or 4 times now, all without fuss, but with the reassurance to carry on as planned! Chances are, your call would get the same result.)

If they don't know what they are talking about, they may still insist you put a breathable groundsheet/footprint immediately under the SIG of your tent... which of course, is a complete waste of time, effort and money, as it will achieve nothing. If they "won't be told", simply go elsewhere... and explain to them just why you are doing so.

If we all did that, when the need arises, they'd soon get the message!

Good advice about checking as we recently booked with Gwithian Farm in Cornwall and was told that no footprint was allowed. This is from there terms and conditions so it is well worth checking.

NO FOOTPRINTS or PLASTIC sheets PERMITTED UNDER TENTS, THEY DESTROY THE GRASS.
Groundsheets. Apart from groundsheets which form an integral part of the tent ALL additional groundsheets must be breathable. This is so campers can enjoy a reasonable green pitch.
No gazebos with groundsheets permitted, or over 2m x 2m due to damage caused to the pitch.

They would love me, first goes down the Tarp FootPrint, then on top of that goes the 1mm Thick Butyl Rubber Pond Liner, and on top of that goes the ZiG for the Tent!

Even my Kitchen Tent has a 1mm Thick Butyl Rubber Pond Liner ground sheet.

I am hoping more than a footprint ruling will define my holiday...although I might feel different if something punctures the groundsheet!

Cornish sun has to be a bonus for a Northener.

I have seen lots of pitches ruined by plastic sheets and footprints,we have always used a breathable ground sheet in our awning and they do work.
I think its quite selfish to leave a horrible dead mushy mess or dried up dusty patch behind for the next occupant.
Due to the damage caused sites will be asking for breathable sheets to used more and more.

Totally agree... apart from the "selfish" bit.
Just to clarify here, we are talking about tents with non breathable SIG or ZIG fitted.
Does putting an additional non-breathable sheet directly below it make the grass any worse? Would putting a breathable sheet below a SIG or ZIG lessen the damage to the grass, seeing as it has a whacking great non-breathable tent sat on it? That's a genuine question. If I thought I could help save the life of the grass by putting a breathable groundsheet below the tent... whilst still keeping my tent's SIG protected and clean... I'd be more than happy to stump up for a breathable groundsheet to use as a footprint. I just can't fathom how that would work?

Of course we all want nice plush grass... and I agree that the site is fully entitled to make their own rules, but by not putting a footprint under a tent, are they achieving anything positive?

I'd agree there is no excuse for not using a breathable sheet in an awning... although personally, I'd stick to bare grass anyway... but under a unit that already has an integrated non-breathable ground sheet fitted? I just can't see the practicality of it.

I wouldn't want to put my tent down directly on the grass, so as things stand, I'm another one who wouldn't stay here.

I run a lawn maintenance company and from time to time come across customers who choose to pitch a tent in their garden, and believe me, groundsheet or not, breathable or otherwise it makes no difference. 10 days+ of any tent with a sewn in ground sheet on the grass will harm the lawn. 10-20 days and we're into horrible, dead mushy mess territory.

Awnings, tarps and marquees are a different story. If ground covering is kept to a minimum, the grass will remain undamaged for a lot longer.

Carrying on from my last post...

I put a footprint groundsheet under my tent to protect my tent's SIG... no other reason.

If the footprint get's damaged/punctured, I'm happy to repair or replace it, as deemed appropriate. If my tent's SIG gets damaged/punctured, yes, I can still repair it... but I would be far from happy, considering what I've just spent on it!!

That protection also covers dirt... it's so much easier to bung a muddy footprint into a bin liner, take it home, and hose it down on my patio, at my leisure, at a time to suit me. What I want to avoid is throwing a 37kg expensive tent around on site, to clean the whole underside before bagging it up for the car!
... And besides, I wouldn't want to be turning that tent over on wet muddy grass, so I'd need a nice clean sheet to do it on!

I believe, rightly or wrongly, that ground sheets, of any nature, inside a caravan awning, are put there for one reason... comfort!
Fully agree, therefore, that these should be breathable, if you must have one at all.

Genuine question... Would a breathable ground sheet, in an awning, for example, protect the grass more than no groundsheet at all? As in, does it minimise the result of constant/regular foot traffic in the same area(s)? If so, I'd take back my previous "Comfort" comment, and add an apology. Genuinely interested in that

For the record, I have recently purchased a non-breathable ZIG for the awnings of my tent. In all honesty, I purchased it "Just in case", along with the purchase of the rest of my tent, as it would mean time, effort and cost to send my awnings back to Holland to have one made at a later date, hence my purchase now.
I genuinely don't think we'll use it (The awning ZIG), and it will prove a waste of money. Yes. we'll relax, cook, and eat in the awnings, but I'm expecting to treat this area as we did under our tarp... on grass!
I must admit, if I did ever feel the need to use it, I would again put a separate footprint under it, for protection. Now that, IMO, would be selfish of me, and I would readily hold my hands up to that!
...then almost certainly go out and buy a breathable groundsheet for the future... and sell my ZIG on T' Bay!

The more I read that, the more I'm confused as to why I actually bought the bloody awning ZIG in the first place!!

I was asked whether I had a breathable groundsheet at South Lytchett and I mumbled something barely comprehensible to avoid a direct answer which would have to be 'No'. I noticed a bit of frustration in the person's eyes but I was only staying for 2 nights so got away with it. It's a shame because the site was great with stunning facilities and wonderful staff which helped me to 're-introduce' my wife to camping (it was our first camping trip with kids). This strange rule does mean that I will probably not go back there any time soon.

having used a breathable groundsheet in our dining area outside the tent for two weeks and interested in the damage we leave I did examine and photo our pitch on leaving. I believe (although may be wrong) that it did protect the grass from wearing in high traffic areas. Whilst it was flattened it didn't appear to be any thinner especially when compared to the high traffic area at the entrance.

I originally begrudged paying for a breathable groundsheet but after seeing the grass wear inside the drive away awning in the lake district 2013 bought an off cut for it and must say I'm impressed with how 'eco' it actually is and then bought another larger piece for the front of the Palamos 6.

Thanks, Tynx.

I kind of thought that, as I was writing my last post, hence the question. It does seem to make sense, the more I try to envisage such a set up.

Maybe these caravanner's do use them to protect the grass, as opposed to just trying to keep their feet a little drier.
Apologies to caravanner's-who-use-awning-ground-sheets, if that's the case, for my earlier "Comfort only" remark.

Another thought just entered my head now...

These site's that demand "Breathable ground sheets only". I presume they mean as opposed to non breathable ground sheets? I presume they wont turn you away if you turn up with no ground sheet at all, because you "prefer bare grass"!

Mucker

The site I mentioned says tent with sig is fine but any other footprint has to be breathable.

I am looking into it myself as I can see this becoming more and more the norm for reasons others have mentioned.

IF the breathable type "works" then I would feel a responsibility to use one.
