Hello! We've decided to use our smaller, second car to save on fuel when we go camping this year, but the smaller car means we'll lose valuable boot space. We already have a roof box, but now we'll also need a trailer to tow our very large Emperor bell tent, camp beds for a family of 6, etc. Can anyone give some guidance about which size trailer we should look for? I always underestimate the size I'm going to need when it comes to this sort of thing, even with the measurements staring me in the face. I'm hoping for a reality check from those with similar sized tents.

If you can pile all the stuff you plan on putting in your intended trailer in a heap roughly the shape of a trailer the stand back and look long and hard at the pile working out what size you will need then go and buy one as big as you can afford and can safely tow because they are never I repeat never big enough!

We have a large cotton tent for the 3 of us, and use fishing beds which are extremely bulky. We also take a table top fridge, oven and loo. To carry all this we have a Brenderup 2205 trailer with extension sides. There is a photo on my gallery. I think the measurements are 203cm x 128cm and it is totally full.

We are a family of 5 with a 7 seater people carrier and bought a 5x3 trailer as had been squeezing everything in the car however bought a few luxury items too. Ended up having to buy a high cover for it and now could do with a roof box too.

Your smaller second car towing a trailer will probably use more fuel than your larger car not towing.

Thank you for your advice. As suspected, the 5x3 trailer might be a squeeze so I'll look for something a bit larger.

Billy, we have considered this already. There is such a huge difference in fuel economy between our two cars, that we are fairly confident we'll still be better off in the smaller car, towing a trailer.

Family of 6 going to use the smaller car. Just how small is it? I built a 5 x 3 trailer many years ago and found it really useful over and over again for things other than camping.

Our local tip (sorry - recycling centre) has a 1.5m maximum length for trailers. Any longer and you have to pay.

The trailer can be quite high, but it is nice to be able to see over the top in the interior mirror and also be high enough to see it when reversing etc.

The problem with most Trailers is that the Sides are to low, but many makes now offer Side extention's this will double the Volume of the Trailer, I would say a 5 x 3 is a good place to start, 6 x 4 could be the perfect size for a camping Trailer, especialy if fitted with Side Extentions and ABS Lid.

Have a look at the Lider Saragos from RedCap Garage, a good size Trailer at a sensible price.

I was thinking the 6x4 would probably be best. The side extensions sound like a brilliant idea.

For going to the tip and moving bulky things in general, we'd use our larger car, the Chrysler Grand Voyager. The smaller car we'll be using for camping is a Mazda 5. Both are 7 seaters but there's zero boot space in the Mazda with 6 seats in use.
