We have a Renault Grand Espace - a huge vehicle with enough space in the boot for 6 weeks camping in France (and still under the window line!), a bike and a roof box on the roof containing our clothes and 3 bikes on a rack on the tow bar. It's a car literally built for the French motorways, and came complete with European sat nav, Cruise control etc.. On a long run and driving sensibly it will manage 40 mpg and it's like sitting in your armchair at home - for us it pretty much the perfect continental camping cruiser.
