Hi

We are new to camping and just getting everything ready for our first trip in May, I need to buy a gas regulator but I have a newbie question, what gas is best for cooking under canvas, Butane or Propane? or does it not matter.

Wayne, if you literally mean "cooking under canvas" I wouldn't recommend any gas (or other hydrocarbon fuel). Apart from the fire risk there's the less obvious danger from carbon monoxide poisoning.

In May in the UK, choice of gas for outdoor cooking shouldn't make a lot of difference. Most cylinder-fed stoves are compatible with both types, the regulator which fits the appropriate cylinder delivering it at the right pressure.

In colder weather (say around 5 degrees C or below) butane will have difficulty vaporising, so propane would be preferable as it works at much lower temperatures.

Campingaz, which is butane, is available - in three cylinder sizes, the largest (R907) possibly being the most popular - in the UK and on the Continent.

Larger (3.9/4.5kg upwards) cylinders of both butane and propane are supplied by Calor or Flogas. Both work out cheaper kg for kg but aren't available on the Continent.

Practically all retailers will charge for your first cylinder, possibly around £30 if I remember correctly, but you may be able to find an empty one elsewhere more cheaply.

I have seen many posts on here with pictures of the kitchen/cooking area setup inside the tents which struck me as a little hazardous, we will be cooking outside weather permitting as we don't have an awning as yet, I think campingaz will be the way to go as we are camping in Italy in June, thanks again for your help.

Yep, CampinGaz is the way to go for Europe, we got our two 907 Cylinders from the local tip, then took them to GoOutdoors for exchange, which means you only pay for the Gaz not the Cylinders.

Genuine CampinGaz Regulators are around £10 plenty of copies about, which are no doubt made in the same Chinese factory available for £5.

We always carry 2 Cylinders, that way we never run out of Gaz, although these days with Electric so available it is not such an issue.

My local Gas supplier is Cheshire Gas.
