Hey,

I have dug out the unused new tent, and what equipment we have left and am just starting to look about for the bits we need to get out camping this year.

Is what I was wondering is how many of you have had success getting onto sites, in August, without booking!

I am planning to do a weekend in June to 'trial' the new tent and fully intend to do a few short trips in August, but ideally I wanted to just phone and book the day before, or on the day.. Basically to avoid going in torrential rain

I just don't want to find myself unable to get in anywhere

We usually book now as we have to book time off work around the kids summer holidays and don't want to disappoint.

However, when it was just the two of us we found that if we rang a campsite at short notice in August, they would all say they were fully booked. So we just drove to the area we wanted to stay and made a note of a least 3 campsites and always found when just turning up there was always a pitch free, a gamble but never slept in the car!

As long as you dont want to go the bank holiday weekend you should be fine. We struggled last year to book anywhere in early june for the bank holiday.

Hiya, We did a two week tour of Cornwall last summer holidays and stayed at 11 sites and we did not book a single one of them. This gave us the freedom to drive around, find a nice area and campsite and enquire as to space.

(Example of a listing in the Club magazine, and on their website - have deleted some details as it's in the Members Only section, but should give you some idea - there are plenty more examples, many during school holidays.)

I really don't want to book and we end up with a wash out of a summer (over the school holidays). I was thinking of phoning on the morning of leaving or maybe the day before and checking if there are any pitches...

I am pleased to hear that it is possible to book last minute or even just turn up.
