We decided to buy a small(ish) dofe style tent for wild camping, one night escapes - a Vango Pulsar 300.
After looking at the glorious weather forecast I decided to book a night at a local campsite for me and my DofE daughter to give it a trial. We were not intending to backpack, so full airbed luxury and a bbq to look forward to. Got up this morning to a weather warning for wind and dreary skies after a night of rain.
Why can't things not go to plan? LOL!!
I had a vision of a laid back, relaxed idyllic little escape...lying out on the DRY grass, admiring the beautiful view. I forsee playing cards huddled inside the tent after trying to bbq in the rain.

On the plus note...looking forward to trying out the trangia.

We had a similar experience in September forecast was for glorious sunshine so rather than take the 4m bell tent I opted for the 4 person inflatable igloo which is our garden tent as only fits 3 SIMs and it drizzled all evening and night! We were lucky the following morning was nice.

You're looking on the plus side tho and being able to play with the Trangia: true camping grit.

Oh dear.... I feel like I have been punished!

Had a fab time with the trangia (fab little thing) and then it started to get really cold. Now my daughter and her DofE kit was fine. 3 season sleeping bag, Vango SIM, thermal leggings. Me on the other hand.... well I had an airbed and a sleeping bag from our summer camping days which feels nice and thick (hubby said it was an ok bag), but it clearly wasn't as I was absolutely frozen all night. :-( All I know about it is that t is years old and is called a Eurohike Hike 1. I have my suspicions that the "1" stands for one season, ie middle of the bloomin summer. How on earth do people manage to sleep rough? I lay there at 2am dithering and wanting to just go home. I tend to feel the cold a lot anyway, but the airbed just felt cold, the bag was cold and even wearing 2 pairs of socks and all my clothes didn't help.
I need some new kit.

I switched from airbed to camp bed + self inflating mattress, and it was a revelation, as the sleep quality is so much better.

When I was using an airbed, I had to add insulation on the ground in the form of a thin foam mat; and on top in the form of a fleece blank or electric underblanket in winter. And it squeaked every time I tossed and turned.

While camping over Christmas in 2011, the trusted airbed developed a leak mid trip. Luckily I was close to home, so that I went back to get thee spare airbed out to continue with the trip.

After that, I switched to camp bed + SIM as I do not wish to be without a bed in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.

Good luck with new equipment buying.

We had camp beds and I didn't like mine, I thought it was uncomfortable. So generally if we have a family camp in the summer we take 4 camp beds and my airbed. :-) I think I will get me a nice SIM and some sort of expedition sleeping bag, that will go to minus figures. :-) I never ever want to go through that again.

I have decided that there is nothing worse than being cold. I would rather have just been uncomfortable. Brrrrr.

Oh yes there is - being wet as well as cold, IMHO.

I can put up with the cold, however, I do not like being wet as well as cold.

Hence I am unlikely to go camping in winter if rain is forecast. Snow is fine, just not rain.

I'm with dk168, posadas bed plus SIM - great nights sleep.
As for the cold, I know that OH is a bit like Mucker and wears bearly anything, I have the same under and over me but I wear thermals under fleece pj's and if it's very cold a little fleece housecoat - I either sleep as sound as a bell or wake up sweating - there's no pleasing is there?!! I must admit I can't be doing with wet - hate it if it's raining when we go for our last wees - mind you a wee dram of the Scottish nectar soon puts that right!!

Forgot to add - once you're cold you're cold when camping at night. It is very hard to get warm again - seems only when it's time to get up! Even if the days are warm, at this time year, the nights are always freezing brrr. If you go again, .....you know you will ... do get a warmer sleeping bag and don't forget your thermals!

I am a wuzz, and always camp with EHU.

At this time of the year, I can wear shorts during the day with Crocs and no socks, however, at night, I would need to cover the bottom half of my legs and feet, and put the heater on.

Hence I wear convertible/zip-off trousers when I go camping nowadays.
