If at all possible, choose a week when he's bought something expensive for himself, but let him make the connection. Don't make it look like a revenge purchase. And don't leave it too late and risk your OH finding it himself.
Secondly, apply a little 'creative accounting'. Chuck out the broken tents and tell your OH you sold them on ebay for a couple of hundred quid - "Couldn't believe the amount people would pay for what turned out to be rare vintage Tesco (or whatever) tents!"

Then, tell him that your friend practically gave the bell tent away. Explain that after the luck on eBay it was practically God telling you to buy it. Rude not to. There was even money to spare.

Throw in a few "It's an investment for the future really", "A tent for life" etc.... Swear on all that you both hold holy that this is definitely it. No more camping stuff. Absolutely none. Nothing.

Keep a straight face while doing this.

Finally, feel good about what you've done. Sure, telling the truth would make you feel better, but what good would it do? Your OH getting angry would only put unnecessary strain on his heart, possiby even long term stress issues. Lying can be hard, but if done for the right reasons, it's the right thing to do. I think you know that.

Good luck!

Don't tell me, Kuppenbender, you're female aren't you? And a married female at that?

And that post of yours... it's actually serious, isn't it? In fact, you've been there, and done that, haven't you!

Shocking, shocking behaviour!

Nothing shocking about it. Normal married life.

Not in this bloody household it ain't!!

...oh wait... I wouldn't know, even if it was, would I!

I may have been a little economical with the truth from time to time.

Where's the harm in sharing a couple of stealth purchase strategies?

I mean a 5m bell tent! You've got to admire the ambition.
