Silly question but a lot of people use earplugs. Supposing there was an emergency and you were in a deep blissful sleep, would you hear warning shouts? I quite often camp with three horrendous snorers (all in different tents) and there's occasions I'd love to deaden the noise.

I use them, they muffle noise but dont block it, you'd still hear an emergency, my hubbys a light sleeper though (wish he was a light snorer as well!) So he would wake if i didnt xx

I have to sleep with them at home as well as on holiday, as my husband is the loudest snorer i have ever known. I would hope in an emergency he would wake If i didnt. Hopefully they wouldnt block out emergency shouts anyway. If they did, well.......

The earplugs I use do not drown out all the noise, just muffle some of them, reducing the noise level by about 28-30db.

I saw some earplugs on sale in the Sainsbury's travel section today. They had interchangeable cores, one set for high frequency noise (the pack said e.g. room noise whatever that is) and one set for low frequency noise (e.g snoring). They were quite expensive, about £7 for the pair.

I have tried the memory foam earplugs, but I do not find them that effective. I think some amount of noise actually reaches your eardrums via the bones in your skull, so no earplugs are going to be completely effective.

I use these ones They block enough for me to get to sleep without being disturbed by DH snoring, but still allow me to hear very loud noises like alarm clocks or shouting.

I wear them all the time, and yes, you would hear an emergency, or someone shouting or whatever. Although I suppose it also depends how deeply you sleep. My hubby doesn't wear earplugs, yet he might still not hear an emergency if he's fast asleep!!

There are loads of different kinds, and I have two types to choose from at home.

I think Campernic and I (both solo campers) feel a bit reassured but think I'll give them a miss following RachIn76's comment as, when I do sleep, I'm out for the count!
Really helpful comments though and I've logged the suggestions. As I said, thought it was a silly question but if it's been helpful to someone else, good!

We use earplugs with our Beavers and Cubs when we have a Samba band come in and do drumming. We can still hear the instructor talk to us, as already said it just muffles the sound. You would hear someone shouting in an emergency.

You can still the sound of a V8 engine rumble past your tent at 6am when you're mate arrives on site demanding a cup of coffee at a hot rod show.

I wear them every night even when at home and I always hear my alarm go off so I am sure I would hear if someone shouted at me in an emergency

Essential kit for camping, ferries, some hotels... they take the edge off any noise and allow you to relax.

As a motorcyclist I also have them anyway, but it's well worthwhile buying a selection on Ebay and finding out which are best for you - they vary widely in size, fit and effectiveness..

For extended trips I use silicon putty ones that fill the outer ear but don't swell in the ear canal itself.

Yep, I use them a lot too and always have them when camping. I prefer the softer foam types and have never slept through an alarm etc.

As other have said, try different types as I found that some can irritate the ear canal.

Took D-I-L a good 15 minutes of constant calling to wake me and Muckerette (I had my ear plugs in, Muckerette had her hearing aids out!) by calling from the tent door, when we were getting evacuated at 5am due to rising waters at the edge of the tent field.
Turns out, she'd already packed up their considerable amount of kitchen gear and beds, all loaded up in the car... all well within 10m of our very ears... and we never heard a thing!

And no... we weren't drunk!

I can recommend the silicone ear plugs from Boots they fit any ear perfectly and will deaden sound enough to sleep but if someone shouts you will still wake up
