BryanMitch described the situation I have most often seen Gazebos used - which is a group of friends (often over the bank hol w/e) putting the Gazebo in the middle of their tents and using it to socialise into the wee hours.

I realise that there are some sensible users of gazebos out there but I have seen the above occur enough times that if we arrive at a campsite and see a Gazebo we pitch as far away from it as possible.

This I guess should add the appeal of using a Gazebo as Id imagine pitching one should ensure you get plenty of space at the campsite

I agree, Katieep.

It is really annoying and very unfair when people insist on disturbing everyone else and taking over the campsite with a huge communal area and then proceed to be as loud as they like! Not to say that those who want to get together under a communal shelter are all like that of course.

We simply used a gazebo in the same place as a front porch would be on a tunnel tent, not a separate area, so effectively like an open porch, as they did not exist as far as I know at that time, and with a large family we needed somewhere to eat and sit outside. On the occasions when friends came over for a drink with us, we were always sure to be quiet and not disturb other people.

My point, I guess, was that a thin fabric tent is not going to be any better to stop noise carrying, and we have heard enough people making a noise inside their tent when drinking with friends to know that really, gazebo or tent, idiots who don't consider others can still disturb the whole campsite whether in a tent or not.
