Now, I'm not a fair weather camper. Ive bought the new tenting gear and found what looks like a great wee site the grandson will enjoy and have been ticking off and bagging my stuff from my list all week. The weekend forecast is 30 mph winds with 40 mph gusts. Having tin-tented and campervanned for the last decade or more I cant remember how windy windy is. Do you consider those windspeeds to be OK for tent or do I caravan instead.
This is a high-sided fibreglass pole tent and personally I would have concerns about camping with a small child in 40mph gusts in that style of tent.
You would probably not suffer damage to the tent if it is pitched well (there is a "surviving wind" sticky on the site), but you would not have a comfortable night, with flapping tent material and the tent being buffeted. I would take the tin tent, as you are lucky enough to have the choice!
Feeblecat, I would suggest you read some of the more recent posts concerning the wind. Having experience high gusts recently, I can honestly say it is not a pleasant experience and I would hate for you to be disheartened with camping and your grandson too!
I think the only thing that saved our tent were the two steel poles and constant checking.
Save it for kinder weather - hopefully it will be soon!

Thaks folks. I'm truly scunnered. I wouldnt be disheartened about poor weather as I've been camping for many, many years and take the good with the bad. Its more about risking stuff and the wee one not having fun. He's been psyched up about going to this particular site all week. According to the forecast it wont be much fun taking him up to the caravan either as the weather there is to be wet as well as windy - we would go and just chill out but not much good for grandson. A lot could change in a couple of days - I remain optimistic!
Tin tent, wellies and waterproofs.......trust me your grandson will love it. Fleecy blankets and hot chocolate with marshmallows when you get in as a treat....can I come please?
We camped in much windier conditions close to the mourne mountains at beginning of may. 50mph gusts and 30 mph sustained winds. As expected our montana with its steel poles stood strong. Our friends used their vango icarus with fiberglass poles did just as good a job and survived intact. The six kids between us were given the option of going home but refused and actually enjoyed the conditions. The dog was terrified however but it hasn't put her off as we've been away since. Wet and windy again. Personally I would camp but its great to have a tourer as well.
Have a great time
Cancelled our weekend with a heavy heart. Looks like being too wet and windy to be enjoyable at the caravan too. Really gutted at not getting away with tent. I know know there are plenty of other weekends - but when you're all ready and raring to go.....................

Sorry to hear that, what a shame, bl**dy UK weather!
We're away late afternoon today for 2 nights having booked a local site after seeing the nice forecast from a few days ago. It's now really dull here with rain predicated and 'breezy' tomorrow, 15-20mph winds but have seen gusts forecast for up to 40mph. Hopefully us and the tent will be OK if we can get pitched and pegged properly later!
