Yes I noticed the price before I went to France in June and felt it was quite a sharp increase over last year! I was then really pleased to find the cost of an exchange in a French supermarket to be 19.95€ (about £14.25). Seems that is a typical price in France and I was glad I waited until I was over there!
Calor is much cheaper - naturally you need an appropriate regulator - but the downsides for me are the size, weight and the fact that Calor is only available in the UK. So it's always Campingaz for me!

We have just changed over to Calor as we have got fed up with the cost of camping gas. We just got the correct regulators and equipment works fine. We will keep the camping gas bottles just in case we go to the continent.

Cheshire Gas up here in the North charge £22 for a 907 refill.
We only go camping in France so have to stick with CampinGaz and to be fair the 907 is the best size cylinder for camping, we carry two cylinders so never run out of gas.
Our current in use 907 has lasted since 2008 and we go camping for a fortnight each year, but make the most of Electric the best we can.
For UK use I would go for BP Gaslite, compact 5kg see through cylinder and a lot cheaper than CampinGaz.

...This is do able if I change the regulators over with the gas cylinders? Or is changing over a fuss and not worth the hassle.
No problem, just slacken off the Jubilee clip, swap regulator (warming hose with boiling water might make it easier), and retighten clip.
Regulator will deliver gas at whichever pressure you need for butane or propane (which avoids the cold weather problem you mention) and will only fit cylinder containing appropriate gas.
Note that both the butane 4.5kg (screw on) and propane 3.9kg (screw in) regulators have a left-hand thread.
