I have used this ever since starting to camp. I now have 2 bottles that need refilling and its £30 a bottle?! Can I use another gas bottle is, calor gas. Providing its butane, is their a difference? I have had a quick look on the internet and seen lots of ideas how to refill myself but I am totally not interested in this(because it would be stupid and dangerous and probably illegal!!!). I want to know whether I have to use campingaz gas bottles or can I use another cylinder with my campingaz stove (a very old one!)? They seem to be a lot cheaper. What is the reason for campingaz being so expensive? I am not out to be "cheap" on this, if it is for safety then thats fine. I just don't like paying more than I have too.
Yes I noticed the price before I went to France in June and felt it was quite a sharp increase over last year! I was then really pleased to find the cost of an exchange in a French supermarket to be 19.95€ (about £14.25). Seems that is a typical price in France and I was glad I waited until I was over there!
Calor is much cheaper - naturally you need an appropriate regulator - but the downsides for me are the size, weight and the fact that Calor is only available in the UK. So it's always Campingaz for me!
We have just changed over to Calor as we have got fed up with the cost of camping gas. We just got the correct regulators and equipment works fine. We will keep the camping gas bottles just in case we go to the continent.
Cheshire Gas up here in the North charge £22 for a 907 refill.
We only go camping in France so have to stick with CampinGaz and to be fair the 907 is the best size cylinder for camping, we carry two cylinders so never run out of gas.
Our current in use 907 has lasted since 2008 and we go camping for a fortnight each year, but make the most of Electric the best we can.
For UK use I would go for BP Gaslite, compact 5kg see through cylinder and a lot cheaper than CampinGaz.
Thank you. This is great advice. I camp in France too and have filled up their in the past. I also camp regularly here for as long as possible into winter months. So I am thinking that I could use calor gas for the holidays here and then use the campingaz in France, and wait till I am back in france in October to fill up? This is do able if I change the regulators over with the gas cylinders? Or is changing over a fuss and not worth the hassle.
Another quick question.......those of you that have changed over do you still use butane? I know that it loses pressure in the cold but I have only had a problem with this a few times (and shaking the cylinder sorted the problem), are their other benefits or pit falls?
Please be aware that there is at least one convicted drug offender on eBay selling Camping Gaz 907 cylinders and putting them in the post, this activity of posting or sending by carrier, is not only illegal but highly dangerous.
Please do not be tempted as you could find yourself talking to others who may take a different view to the one you have of getting a right good bargain, yep you could end up in court, with claims against you that you should have known this practice was highly illegal.
Rocket Man.
Oh, re eBay, they are happy to help anyone including drug dealers so long as it contributes to their coffers.

No problem, just slacken off the Jubilee clip, swap regulator (warming hose with boiling water might make it easier), and retighten clip.
Regulator will deliver gas at whichever pressure you need for butane or propane (which avoids the cold weather problem you mention) and will only fit cylinder containing appropriate gas.
Note that both the butane 4.5kg (screw on) and propane 3.9kg (screw in) regulators have a left-hand thread.
