Hi all

Hopefully you can help me....

Our current car is a c-max and when camping with have an erde 122 trailer with the high sides. We find that the capacity is enough for us so that we are not up to the gunnels in the back.

Anyway, we are due to go camping next Monday for the week and last friday I was rear end shunted, so my bumper is all smashed and the sockets from the tow bar got all bent in. I don't know if, once the socket plate is pulled back out everything will be functional or not.

My car insurance allows me to have a 'like for like' car, so I have said I would need a car with a tow bar. The car hire people did phone me, but I am waiting on the mobile assessor coming out to see if my car can have minimal work done it (sorting the towbar out) so that we can still go away and then have the repair once we get back, so I can't say if I would need a hire car with towbar. (The towbar requirement kind of flummoxed the fella that I was speaking to at the car hire company)

Hopefully the assessors will be able to come out in the next few days, so I can say whether I need a car or not, but I have a feeling I will need a hire car due to the time available.

So (after that long drawn out explanation), if the hire car company can't provide a suitable car with a towbar, what other car do you suggest that would give a large boot capacity so that we wouldn't need a trailer? My husband suggested a s-max with some seats taken out at the back (there is only the three of us in total).

Can you suggest any others? I don't want to agree to a car which I think will fit the bill and then find we can't get all our gear in.

TIA

My car was hit from behind and I was told it had to have a new towbar fitted even though it wasn't smashed,Insurance company said it's unsafe to tow once it's been hit

Yes heard that if tow bar is damaged a replacement will be required , make sure this is replaced , stress damage could have occurred , replacement car , ask for a 7 seater as stress to them it's required for your holiday & good luck 🇬🇧

That is really bad luck.

For a car, I make do with a vauxhall vectra and manage to squeeze the 3 of us in with 5 nights camping stuff.

For you, it might actually be worth trying out a van with 3 seats in the front? I have occasionally glanced wistfully at a transit when preparing for a camping trip!

I have a vectra & we still need a roof box & trailer!!! A van sounds like the only option to be certain of getting it all in.

I should add we have 3 kids & dog too ☺️

Try a Peugeot Partner or Citroen Berlingo. They are huge load carrier and still not too big to park. I get just under 50mpg running round or on a run. very comfy and lovely upright driving position. Sliding side doors are great on holiday or for young kids etc. Tail gate opens and make a great canopy to sit under.

I can recommend the van idea,I bought one as the gear outgrew the space we had available. It's surprisingly good on fuel as well, half a tank from South Cumbria to deepest darkest Dorset. Also it's very comfy, no back ache or stiffness after a long run.

Dance before the storm and don't look back to where you've been.

If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the gravity of the situation.

I don't want it I just need it.

For family reasons we have just had to change our car and bought a Citroen Berlingo . Unbelievable space!

5 seats, high head room, spacious width and a boot that swallows everything. Added to that there are roof bars, so a top box can be fitted.

Diesel economy and fab to drive, has a tow bar
One happy person here.

We tow a FC, but are considering moving to caravan, I think the Berlingo has c1,100kg capacity, was I think a tow car of the year in the recent past.

VW Sharan with seats out is massive :)

Seat & Ford do the same build I think.

Some sites won't allow commercial vehicles so may be worth checking if they'd allow a van.

SEAT Alhambra - like Gloucester says.

We took out the rearmost two of the seven seats and our greyhound can wander around in the space but it'll still carry 5 adults or 3 with even more luggage space.

Good luck!
