I left the C&CC after many years of membership partly due to the best tent pitches at my two favourite club sites being changed to caravan pitches.
At another two club sites that I visited the tent pitches were on rough hilly ground whilst caravans had nice level pitches.
The C&CC pitch fees work out a fair bit less for members if you do most of your camping outside of high season, especially if you are over 55 and get the age discount as well.
If you're restricted to going in school holidays, the financial advantages are a lot less.
It's a good deal for us, because we avoid school holidays and we're old!
I am a member of C&CC since 2007 and have only used their Club Sites, and all is good so far.
I prefer to use club sites for their clean facilities, and security with wardens on site 24/7. The latter is particularly important to me as I camp on my own with my dog.
As for more and more hard-standing pitches being installed, it is not just C&CC club sites that are doing it.
It is a sign of changing times, with pre-erect tents and huts etc. being popular with those who like the idea of camping but not the prepared to fork out the money for equipment in case they do not like it; or to put in the elbow grease to put up the tent etc...
