Hi,

Having had a really poor experience with two Vango 75 SIMs I am thinking of opting for the Outwell Dreamboat. It looks to be really expensive but if it means avoiding trying to uncoil my spine every morning it might be worth the outlay. Can anyone recommend it?

Can't comment on the Outwell, but we got two ThermaRest DreamTime XL's back in 2008.

We camp for a fortnight or more each year and the DT's have been brilliant, stupidly big pack size but well worth the effort.

They have now been superceeded by the Neo-Air Dream XL.

I went for Therm-a-rest 7.5cm Luxury Map XL, so good that I bought another one as a spare.

We're delighted with our Exped Comfort 10cm... although thus far, we have only used them on top of camp beds. After this coming Friday night, I'll know whether they are any good on the floor, as we'll be overnighting en route through France, and plan to leave the camp beds in the boot.

Fingers crossed!

Sounds like Therm-a-rest is the brand to go for. Thanks for the recommendations.

I've got the dreamboat and love it. The box shape and extra width are brilliant, I use a fleecy topper on it and it's like sleeping on my bed at home.

Hi Honeybell,

The fleecy topper on a dreamboat sounds the business.

Exped Megamat 10cm.   MisterT not a happy camper by nature but actually professed to sleeping really well once we had invested in these.    Still not an enthusiastic camper but at least he isn't so grumpy in the morning!!!

PS early season we have used brushed cotton fitted sheets from John Lewis - adds a little extra luxury (along with a thick bobble hat!). Who says romance is dead?

Consider Alpkit's Dozer 75mm SIM.

Available as single width (£60) and double width (£90)

We have always had a variety of Vangos - from 5cms for the children to 7.5cms extra wides for us. What I've realised about SIMs (for me) is that extra width is worth it as I obviously move around a lot.

However, after our last but one camping trip where I woke up almost unable to move, I invested in an Outwell Dreamboat. I love the 3d profile that makes it seem much thicker than the 7.5cm it is (and it seems thicker than the other 7.5s I have). It is so easy to roll up, needs a bit of puff to get up to full thickness (unlike the Vangos). It's very soft and I woke up without creakiness (I have back issues).

However, it is HOT. I think there is something about the foam inside it that retains heat? I don't know but I had the worse two nights sleep ever on it, which may be coincidence but I felt like I was sleeping on a heated mattress. Which is, obviously, great for some people but I'm the sort of person for whom a bedroom is never cool enough and I like to sleep with the window open. I'll give it another chance however as it is super comfy and not like an SIM at all really. Every other member of my family is simply waiting for me to give it up so they can have it, even the 'baby' wants it!

Just my tuppence worth..

We use 2 single Alpkit Dozers and they've been brilliant. Just the right thickness so they add comfort without feeling like you are on a wobbly airbed.

We use them on a double Outwell Posadas and I'd recommend singles so you can't feel the other person's every move.

If we get a smaller road trip tent (which we are considering for next year), we'll just use them directly on the floor and I'm sure they will be comfortable.

Cannot speak highly enough of the Dreamboat. We have the double which we lay over the Outwell Posadas bed, superb nights sleep and although there is a bar down the middle of the bed, the mattress moulds itself to the natural curve. It's a bu?!er to roll up and put back in the sack but we bought a couple of 1m Velcro straps from Amazon and that certainly helps. Be aware, you must open it up and let it breath and dry any moisture away, permanently: only roll up for transporting,
